Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

How do you use cuisinairre(sp) rods to teach fractions? Would you be able to teach adding and subtracting fractions with them?
Thanks

you could definitely show "parts of the whole" fractions by using a 10 rod, for example, and doing 1/2s and 1/5s, or a 6 rod and show 1/3s, and 1/2s, etc...

I'm so glad you asked about the adding/subtracting fractions aspect, though...I can't seem to wrap my head around how to teach it with number rods, though I'm sure you can and it's probably really cool!

We use Miquon and Cuisenaire rods... but when it came to fractions, I printed out the pieces and circles from here. I printed it on cardstock and used a different color for the different fractions. (Orange for thirds, yellow for halves, etc.)

I could understand how to use the rods - but the kids just didn't get it at all, having been "trained" that a little red one =2, not 1/3... KWIM?
