Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Does anyone have domestic geese? Or are you planning on getting some soon?

What breeds?

What's your plan on housing and such?

What about ganders and young kids?

Any thoughts on geese?

I'm thinking about a breeding pair of American Buffs, but it may not be the right time in my life just yet.

I don't have anything to tell you, but I'll be listening. We had been considering geese, too; my dd tells me they are good weeders, and we could definitely use some help in the garden. I had been looking at Buffs and Pilgrims... but like you, I'm not sure I can handle geese right now on top of turkeys (which we're pretty sure we're going to do) and meat chickens for the first time.

Yeah Angela, that sounds like a full plate. I was really wanting turkeys also, but I cannot figure out the logistics of how to confine them to our acreage. They fly. We could discuss this on the heritage turkey thread.

I think I'm going to do it! I think I just might order 5 buffs and 5 embden from mcmurray. Then, donate the embdens to our lovely local organic farmers with a large family. Then I'll just have the 5 to observe through the summer to see who looks best for breeding. In the fall we'll see if we want to butcher 2 or 3.

Geese supposedly poop a lot. Hmmm. On 3 acres I wonder how much of an issue that is.

I am really trying to make up my mind here!

Sarah, did you order your geese? We decided not to this year, mostly because of all the housing we needed to build for more layers, meat birds, and turkeys. But I am hoping to do geese and ducks in the future, so I hope you will post your plans and experience if you are getting geese!

Angela,

Sadly, I did not order geese. I didn't get organized enough to pull it off.

I wish I had.

I will someday. . .
