Hi!
May I please ask for ideas of morning routines that work for you and your children on a regular HSing day? We (myself and my 7 dc) do like to sleep in "alittle"..but apart from breakfast, getting dressed, making our beds, teeth-brushing and our daily chores..that covers our morning.
Really, schoolwork doesn't officially start until after lunch!
With baby #7 just having arrived over the Christmas Holidays, I don't expect too much..just looking for a new approach compared to our old one.
Thank you in advance!

I don't have much in terms of helpful ideas, but I just wanted you to know that we're in the same boat.
Our schedule seems to be get up, dressed, breakfast, clean-up, prayers, school, and a late (12:45-1pm start) lunch. Read alouds, naps for nappers, a little free time, dinner making, and house clean up for dad coming home. Time flies by . I'm working on streamlining things, we'll see how that goes.
God bless,
Christine

This thread might be of help to you....
scheduling issue...running out of time
Our morning time takes about 2 hours and includes:
**wake-up (we're early risers here)
**get dressed and make beds and brush hair
**morning chores (feed animals, birds, fish)
**breakfast
**clean-up
**morning prayers
**teeth brushed
**laundry started
If there is any extra time, it's free time. We're usually starting lessons between 8 and 9...but we're up by 5:30 here.

5:30, Jennifer? Everybody? Ay.
Our morning routine looks like this, Nique:
I wake up, work out, pray, have coffee, shower
Kids wake up
Breakfast
Clean-up
Morning chores (everyone has their own)
Get dressed/ready for the day
Our focused learning time starts around 9:30/10:00

I know! Yep! Everybody!
I was real whiner about this for the first years of my parenting 'cause I'm actually a night owl by nature...but, I just figured that God made these children to help me be a saint, so since whining and crying about how every single one of my children being early risers wasn't getting me anywhere...I figured why not just be joyful and learn to be a morning person. I am actually really learning to enjoy the early morning times and it does help me feel we're moving on the day nicely.
I do wish sometimes that I had a few minutes to myself in the early morning for quiet prayer, but that is not to be for me right now...so, I have taught the children not to disturb me when I'm in my "prayer chair"!!! I read this story somewhere (and I wish I could remember where so I could give credit!) of a lady with a number of children who desperately needed a quiet time for prayer. She taught them that if they saw her with her apron over her head that meant she was praying and only to disturb her if there was blood involved. I found great wisdom in that, so I taught my kids the same only I use my rocking chair and call it my prayer chair. You will occassionally catch me with my apron over my head attempting to gather my wits though!

Ay, 5:30...
We are trying to streamline our morning routines as well right now- having teens has changed it radically!
We also take about 2 hours to get going (glad we are not alone!)
I get up and pray, wash up and make breakfast. Kids are playing or reading. I call them for breakfast and we read the Bible at breakfast (laundry has already been booted for the morning). After that the kids get themselves ready and usually do chores (although they have dropped off the radar lately in preference of a little more streamlined a scene (but that leaves it all on me- which can = a grumpy mommy!). We gather then to pray, read about a saint etc. and either read aloud or scatter to math and such things.
When they were younger our peg was breakfast and bible, followed by getting ready and chores...day in day our through the years...It worked well.

Mine are little, but we're early risers too because our boys are. My youngest is up no later than 6:30, usually 6, and my older one is up no later than 7.
Our days go best if I get up by 6 and have a few minutes to myself to take a shower and pray. If not it takes me a lot longer to get going. I am a night owl by nature, so this has been (and continues to be) a hard change to make.
It takes us about 2 hours to get going in the morning from first getting up, brushing teeth, getting dressed, making beds, upstairs chores, breakfast, etc. So usually we're ready to do our first work of the day by 9ish.

I have to get up a bit after 6 to see my highschooler off to school, and because Aidan is up by then.
I have a 6-7:30 am routine that includes: getting dressed, protein shake for the high schooler, make coffee and fire, start laundry, dishwasher unloading, a straightening or tidying of whatever needs it, get Aidan dressed and give him meds for the morning, drive highschooler to bus stop, get breakfast for Aidan and say morning prayers.
Then Aidan usually watches a short video while I have coffee and check email.
Then I make breakfast -- the rest of the kids are usually up by then. They do their chores, get dressed etc. We usually start the homeschooling day between 8:30 and 9 am.
I don't have a newborn or any babies at all! I think that makes a big difference in how fast things get done!

I have tried and tried to get up before the kids. Just doesn't happen on a regular basis. And I don't even have a baby.
Here's our morning routine though:
*Kids wake up 7:30am or so (and me too)
*Fix breakfast
*I take shower while kids eat breakfast
*Kids do chores, I check email
---dishes to sink, make beds, get dressed, brush teeth, clean bathroom sink/toilet, feed cats, sweep kitchen, pick up bedrooms
*School gets going around 9/9:30am generally.
I really, really wish I could get up and get going before the kids. They don't even get up that early. I will say that ever since high school and college I have needed 1-2 more hours sleep than the average. I never pulled all nighters in college...sleep has just always been important. So, I guess old habits are hard to break. Uggg....I just really wish I could make myself get up consistently every morning earlier. But I keep plugging away.

I think what you said about not expecting too much is a good idea, what with a new baby.
If you just want to shake things up a bit maybe consider moving chores to after lunch and some afternoon school to the morning where the chores were.

Hmmm... We just had a baby here in Dec.. I am having a tough time getting up before 8am, but this week I've been getting up by 7:30am
My kids are getting up by 7:15. As soon as I'm up I get breakfast going.
I am trying to start school by 8:30am. One trick I've been doing is to have math and copywork ready to go the night before so I can just tell them to start school even if I'm not ready
So morning is like this:
7am-8:30 wake, dress (well sometimes), eat.
8:30am-11am school
11am-12pm chores and free time
12pm- 1pm Lunch
1pm-3pm finish school
I am trying to make sure the kids are getting to bed on time so we can get back on schedule. I'm not worrying so much about house and chores (except laundry and food) just trying to get school done each day.
It's tough with baby. But, he is the best!
