My dd is in 7th grade this year and doing well in Algebra 1. I think she's right where she needs to be but I'm concerned that I won't be able to count this on a college transcript. What should I do? Slow her down?
As she gets closer to high school, I want to keep in mind the admissions requirements of some of the schools we may be interested in. How can she get "four units of college-prepatory math" if she does Alg. 1 and possibly even Alg. 2 before she even enter high school. I'm starting to freak out a bit.
Can anyone advise me on this??

I took Alg 1 in 7th and 8th grade in public school as a child. Ang 2, Geometry, Trig, and Calc for the 4 years of high school. I went to a great college. So, I would not hold your child back, if it were me, I would just let her progress as she naturally would.

I took Algebra 1 in 7th grade. I took calculus in 11th grade. My high school arranged for me to take a college level calculus 2 class in 12th grade.
I had a friend at a different high school who took calculus in 11th grade and no math in 12th. We were accepted to the same colleges. My thought is this-- he took all available math courses in high school, a college wasn't going to penalizing him for doing it early.

I did this same course of study when I was in high school. But it seems that Trig. isn't typically taken as a separate course anymore so you can't count that for one of the years anymore.

Does it vary by county in Va? I know some friends here in Loudoun that are trying to have their sons Alg 1 (he took at home) count on his high school transcript. This boy did take the highest math they offer, something above Calculus (I think, not being a mathie, my eyes glaze over after Alg/Trig) I would definitely contact the schools you are interested in.
Oh but you are talking about college requirements, not high school? (I haven't had my caffiene yet  ) I would think the colleges would be willing to work with you. Are you planning on having her take classes at a junior college?
I am looking at doing the same thing with my son, he is only in 5th now, but I think he will be ready for Alg 1 in 7th.

I don't know how the rules have changed now, but I took Alg. 1 in 8th grade, Geometry in 9th, Algebra 2 in 10th, Trig. in 11th and Physics in 12th which counted double as a Math and a Science (I think because it was an honors class).

Yes, I'm looking at college requirements. We have not yet decided if we will have her pick up some classes at the local community college but that is a very likely option.

My dd is in 6th and doing Alg. 1 (Jacobs) but it will take her 2 years as I find the lesson practice is long. Here in Manitoba I know I can count it toward her highschool transcript (I was careful to ask that question last week at a meeting with the govt. guy as I have heard It can sometimes be difficult to list it that way).

Can I hijack this thread a little? I am wondering what your child did last year to lead into Alg I in 7th grade. Did she just do a 6th grade math text or pre-algebra?
I am wondering because my 7th grade daughter did ABeka 6 last year and has been doing Lial Basic College Mathematics this year (it is what I had on hand from last child. She isn't happy with it because it is SO basic. I am not sure what to move her into. I am not very familiar with the scope and sequence of middle school math to be sure that she wouldn't be skipping over something if we went right into pre-algebra or Alg I. Doesn't TT do 7th grade, then pre-algebra and then Alg I? Do we need to hit all of those levels?

Hi Molly,
My daughter moved into TT Alg. 1 from Saxon Pre-Algebra. I'm sorry I'm not familiar with Abeka math but I'd suggest you take a look at the placement tests on the TT website. That probably didn't help you much!

Perhaps this guide to the home school entry requirements at several different schools will help?
I can't really see a college having a problem with your child taking Algebra I early--you would simply document that along with the courses they take later. I took it early in public school and had Alg II/Trig, Geometry, and Pre-Calculus in high school, but there were other math classes some kids took that also counted and weren't really "higher level"--maybe related to accounting? Not sure, but I don't really see you running into problems unless it is with a public or private school should you decide to put her in for high school.Collegeguide

THe Lial Basic College Math includes pre-algebra if she goes all the way through it. (One of my older sons used it) RIght now, I have 2 7th graders doing TT pre-algebra and you don't get to simple algebra until Chapter 10. The first 9 chapters review the basics, then percents, decimals, fractions, and measurement.
I would stick with the Lial (maybe you can flip ahead and see when the pre-algebra starts) and then move into Algebra 1. You do need to sort of understand the basic algebra equation (finding x) before starting Algebra 1.

I was going to say that I wouldn't worry about Alegra 1 not being on a high school transcript. It is very common in CA for students have it in 8th grade. My oldest had it in 7th at school.
I would be more concerned in the order that you do the rest of the math courses. For some reason, the school district decided to do Algebra 2 before Geometry when my sophomore, who is home now, was in the 9th grade.
My mom, who was a high school math teacher for over 30 years didn't understand that. I am going to pay attention to what she thinks on this one because she has experience in the trenches.
Wait, I just went back and re-read what you posted. Are colleges really requiring four years of math? I thought it was three.
I just checked the A-G requirements that the University of California system requires, which I have found to be pretty standard in out of state colleges, three years of math. Neither one of my girls will have had alegra 1 on their transcripts and my oldest is in college now.
