This is the longest i've nursed so far. I'm wondering how many times is normal for around this age. Dd3 has food allergies so she has restricted diet. The dr. says she's a bit underweight(5% in weight but 50th in height). She's allergic to cows milk. I give her soy milk but she doesnt really like it. I nurse in the morning, naptime, 1x in the afternoon and then at bedtime and then many times during the night. I give her soy between breakfast and lunch and then again sometime between lunch and dinner. I'm wondering if this is normal. TIA!

Well, I am usually pregnant at that age, but mine still nurse several times a day and throughout the night. We co-sleep. My 13 month old nurses hourly still, but he doesn't eat or drink anything else.

Gracie,
I have a 15 month old and it sounds as if she nurses as often as your does. She still seems to nurse through the night a lot, first thing in the morning, and the for a nap during the day with little "nips" here and there, mostly for comfort. The saddest thing the other day was when she stopped nursing to ASK for a bottle! Anyway, that is off the subject. I think it sounds about right, but my daughter eats like a horse!!! She eats her dinner, then she cruises the table bench as I am cleaning up the plates and she grazes on her sisters plates too! She is pretty chunky! Maybe increase her food at mealtime more? Or, a protein snack here and there? Have you tried Ovaltine for the soy milk? That might help.

I have learned, after nursing nine 15 month olds now, that there is no such thing as 'normal'!! Sound like she's doing fine to me.

Thank you ladies! I feel better now.
It's hard to add new foods b/c her allergies(allergic to milk, eggs and peanuts but i suspect more). Right now she's reacting and i cant figure out what it is she's reacting to and i wont give her anything new until i can. My older dd's have been restricted to eat only in the part of the kitchen the baby cant get to. Before there would be crumbs all over and the baby would pop something in her mouth and of course it would be something she was allergic too. But it's been a week or so and her skin hasnt gotten any better so i'm left to wonder if it's something in her diet or if it's dust mites. She was tested as a baby but only to a few things. I'm suspecting wheat and corn, which is in a lot of things! Im praying its not soy. Tomorrow i'm going to get some allergy encasings for her mattress and box spring. I pray that it will help or if not, at least that rules out dust mites for the cause of her ezcema. I'm so frustrated about this!
Thank you again ladies!! Sorry for the vent.

My 19 month nurses all the time! Whenever I look available he's ready to cuddle up and nurse. He also nurses throughout the night and although I'm very tired I'm not ready to give up that special time together. Sounds like all is well for you.
BTW, my son eats plenty of food and water, he just likes this mothering time.

Mommies who nurse throughout the night....
I'm convincing myself that nursing Teresa during the night has caused teeth issues. The dentist says it's the same as giving a baby a bottle of juice to sip on all night. My heart is absolutely broken to think that I should have stopped sooner. It's all my fault. At the same time, I nursed all my children until 2, without the same results. I've prayed for a miracle for her teeth, but this is one prayer God has answered no to.
Please share your thoughts on nursing through the night.
Do you think our milk has the sugar like fruit juice?
Because of this, if we are ever blessed with another child, I'm seriously considering ending nursing by 1.
Any thoughts. Be honest, but gentle. My mommy heart is so broken.

no milk is not like fruit juice.. I mean.. if a tooth is knocked out you put it IN MILK to save/transport it for being able to put it back in.
But anything that pools in their mouth while sleeping can cause issues.. breast milk is the least likely to do so.. since they have to actively nurse to get anything.. not at all like a bottle that will drip drip drip all night even if they're not sucking.
Plus breastmilk has antibacterial properties.. and supposedly it's the bacteria that really causes the cavities.. but breastmilk is one of THE BEST things to use to get rid of pink eye.
At the most.. you could choose to night wean.. it certainly doesn't mean that you have to give up nursing sooner at all.
Plus I don't think they ever consider that there are other issues such as being born with things.. had a dentist try and tell me that.. and I looked at him like he was bonkers and explained again that when my son's teeth CAME IN.. they had spot of enamel missing. not fun but certainly not because of nursing. And he's one of the middles.. so it's also not because I've had "too many" kids. There are simply legitimate genetic issues.. and they rarely will say that's what it is.. I guess they think if they tell you that "it's not your fault" that means you give up any care or something. So everything will always be your fault for whatever it is you're doing or not doing.

I'm not up to date on my breastfeeding issues as I once was, but there are have numerous studies that have shown that some children will have dental caries in SPITE OF nursing, not BECAUSE of nursing. You can look at the La Leche League website for more info. and other places. I certainly don't think you caused your child's dental caries. My 2nd child had a front tooth that came in looking chipped, as well. She had to have some extensive work done at 25 mos. old with a pediatric dentist (sedation dentistry) and had bonding done. It wasn't nearly has bad as I had feared. Remember.... those baby teeth are called "milk teeth"...'

JoAnna and Jodie are absolutely correct. I am so sorry to hear that your dentist told you such a thing ~ he's just flat out wrong. Nursing requires a different 'suck' than a bottle, breastmilk is totally different that juice or even cowmilk/formula. KellyMom has an excellent article on this - maybe you should print it out and take it to your dentist - I'd hate to think that he is the reason women and babies are ending their breastfeeding relationship early with his misinformation.
Rest your heart mama, you have not done a thing wrong - quite opposite in fact!

Re: nursing through the night:
Dd 1 nursed until she was 34 mos old, including night nursing - age 7, no cavities
Dd 2 nursed until 21 mos including night - many cavities
Dd 3 nursed until 29 mos including night - no cavities
Dd 4 nursed until 29 mos including night - cavities
Since Dd3 and 4 are twins, they were exposed to exactly the same things, and their teeth are nothing alike. My dentist says that cavities are caused by heredity.
To the OP- we have many food allergies, have you kept a food diary of what you and the baby eat? This usually helps pin down what is going on.
