Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Anyone out there know of any Jesuit composers from the 1500s to the 1800s??? We are studying the Jesuits during this period and I wondered about this. I know they were famous for training the indians in the missions to sing, but beyond that, don't know much. Any suggestions???

Thanks, Kelly in FL

Thanks to Kathryn who came up with the name Domenico Zipoli. A Jesuit composer, who studied under Scarlatti, he chose to go to the reductions in South America. Appaprently the Jesuits were really looking for composers to bring music to the reductions. Zipoli died of fever there at a very young age, but his music is still around, available on recordings. He was JUST what we were looking for for our unit. THANKYOU, Kathryn!

PS If you enjoy baroque harpsichord music, or are looking for some period music to include in your studies, I recommend Zipoli. Very nice music.
