Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Sorry if this has already been posted. But here is a fun study on the race and a chance to study Alaska. I just signed up yesterday so don't worry about the deadline:

Oh, we did this a few years back and had such a great time tracking our sledder (who ended up way back in the pack but still finished!).

There are great books and movies to go with such a study .... enjoy the ride!

We're doing it too. We bought and watched the Discovery Channel's 2-disc 6 episode "season" of last year's race. The kids are way excited now!

Was going to add some great picture books - looks like Suzanne already has those covered

So adding some other websites:
Ultimate Iditarod (has good musher's dictionary of terms and anatomy of a dog sled)
Scholastic (activites, history, trivia)

And activities:
Iditakid has an idea for a physical education activity/race with the children being the dogs and mushers.

Cute craft stick sleds

Since I like to rabbit trail all over the place, some possible side trails to touch on:
-wireless telegraph
-bush pilots & Carl Eielson(early history in Alaska)
-serum/vaccine science
-diphtheria (& epidemmics)
-Alaska history & background (Russian traders/settlements,"Seward's Folly," Yukon & other gold rushes)
-impact of the snowmobile on dog sleds

So, I'm trying to figure out what I want from The Iditarod Insider, so we can watch this crazy thing.....

Video on Demand
daily updates, expert analysis from the trail, musher interviews, behind the scenes footage, and live streaming video of the start, re-start, and always-climactic unpredictable finish. Quality and quantity you won't find anywhere else.
or
GPS Tracking
lets you follow the entire field 24 hours a day until the last team reaches Nome. You'll know how fast teams are traveling, distance between teams and checkpoints along with current temperatures on the trail.

Ages of my kids are :   8, 6.5, 5.5, 3 and baby-who-has-no-idea-what-a-dog-is.

Anyone want to tell me what to do?

ETA: Each one is $20 or both for $33

This doesn't answer your question at all Suzanne, but I decided to spring for the $33 combo. I'm hoping the GPS thing really works!!! This is our first year following.

DH told me to "put myself out of my misery" and just spend the extra $13 to get both.        So, I did.

I made up some Math Charts today for tracking the day, the distances gone each day, mile markers, etc. I couldn't find anything already made up on line, which surprised me. If anyone finds anything, post a link.    It's perfect timing, too, cuz we're just starting to get into Multiple Digit addition and subtraction.

We had guests over tonight for a birthday party, and everyone hovered around the Iditarod / Alaska Map for about 30 minutes!

All the picture books have been wonderful! But, so far, Iditarod Dream, about the Jr. Iditarod (photographs) is the kids favorite book.

And, we were all BAWLING reading Stone Fox the other night....that is ONE GREAT STORY!

And, the two videos/documentary-type are big hits here:
Iditarod: a far distant place
Alaska's Great Race ~ the Susan Butcher Story. They LOVE them!

We've also rabbit-trailed a bit :

**Alaskan Pipeline....especially since dh worked at Prudhoe Bay and Kodiak years back

**Gold Rush and specifically at Iditarod.....which led to a "Ghost Town" rabbit trail.

**Denali / Mt. McKinley.....DH summited in 1993, so we're reading and talking all about the mountiain, wildlife, mountain climbing, etc. This picture book Up on Denali:Alaska's Wild Mountain has been GREAT!   We're having a slideshow this Friday night, with his slides from the Denali trip!

And, I forgot to say THANKS for posting those other link/websites, Mary....we've been using them like crazy!

OK.....I'm putting this here, just for future archive-searchers.....

THIS "RABBIT-TRAIL" IS SO MUCH FUN.....YOU HAVE TO DO IT AT SOME POINT!!! (There. I got that off my chest.) And, I'm not really even a dog-lover.

There is really just SO MUCH you can do with this. It's so fun for the whole family.   And, the neighborhood too.       My poor neighbors are probably so tired of random Iditarod books showing up on their doorstep with little post-it notes that say "You HAVE to read this one!"

This HS mom has a whole bunch of stuff on her blog, I forgot to link earlier:
Peaceful Meadow Homeschool

And, Mary just told me there is a new Alaska Stamp being released!!!!!!!!

And, here's a good Iditarod-Love-Story for all to enjoy.....

Jen Seavey, age 22, who place 43rd is married to the 6th place finisher this year, Dallas Seavey, age 21.

She wrote:
Quote:
"When I was 18, I stumbled upon an ad on the Internet for handlers at the Seavey's Iditarod Racing Kennel. After a couple of phone calls, I decided that college would have to wait, and I bought a one-way ticket to Alaska. I met my husband, Dallas Seavey, when he picked me up at the airport. I handled for the Seavey kennel for two winters and worked as a tour guide in the summers. Dallas and I now spend our summers in Anchorage running the WildRide Sled Dog Rodeo."

Before I returned this book, I wanted to mention it here:

Born to Pull is a great informative book about dogs and dog-sledding. We started out looking at the websites which are FULL of info, but then found this book, and it took over. It's really good.

Aimed at upper elementary kids....perfect for kids who are really interested and want to learn about the nuts and bolts of the dogs and the sport. The illustrations are great and there is a TON of info.

Anyone who did the eiditarod project....did you get your packet yet?

We received ours! Our musher scratched! It's hard to read the name, we think it looks like Aaron Peck.

Only 23 days until the Iditarod!!!

You still have time to request all those amazing Iditarod books from your library, get your map set up, and maybe a fun craft!

MUSH!

We have our Alaska map hanging up -- (Rand McNally from Amazon)
We're picking out our mushers this week. (Thanks to Walter McKenzie's yahoo group. http://surfaquarium.com/eIDITAROD/

and I'm wondering...
Suzanne, did you use the Iditarod Insider last year? Did you think the Insider was worth the price?

I went for it and signed up for the Iditarod insider.

We've picked our mushers too.

Has anyone else chosen their mushers to follow?

Yes, I did!! It was fun following the GPS markers of each musher and the video as they were coming in to the checkpoints was really neat.

Dad- Gerald Sousa #48
DD-1 - Lance Mackey #49
DD-2 - Jessie Royer #6
DD-3 - John Stewart, #69
And, DD-4 (age 4) wants to pick a "mushroom" too, but we ran out of time the other day, and must do it TOMORROW!

Bumping - Iditarod starts next weekend. It's been a few years since this thread has been bumped. Has anyone been following or doing projects the past couple of years? Just found out our local Wildlife Museum is having a big Iditarod event on Saturday with live coverage of the start on their IMAX screen, local dogs and other hands on activities.

Was looking to see what is new in the picture book realm. Not too much, but here is a soon to be published book - An Iditarod Snow White - sounds interesting.
Alaska's Snow White and Her Seven Sled Dogs ( Mindy Dwyer)
