Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi,
I starting using life of fred algebra I with my 6th grader this fall (he has always been very math advanced and a self learner and I loved everything about this series and what I read here). For the first time every he is struggling with his math. I think it started out that he was cruising through the book figuring out the algebra in his head rather than using the formulas and learning the techniques and then when it starting getting more complex with 2 variable and graphing he was just lost. I told him in the beginning that this would happen, but well he wanted to do it his way and so since Thanksgiving we have been reviewing using worksheets I pull of the net on the basic concepts and working together. This is taking a lot of my time to try to reteach this stuff and he is not liking math for the first time ever and I hate this. I thought he would love algebra like I did.

Anyway, I'm wondering what to do now...keep printing out review sheets and going over concepts with him and have him do some of the games/lessons on the internet...I've found some neat algebra stuff or order a new text, possibly the one through Singapore Math (any other recommendations?) or keep plugging through life of fred and trust that he'll get it eventually (I'm not really comfortable moving forward until I feel he really has a handle on the early concepts though).

Ugh...I hate reinventing the wheel. Thing is I really think he enjoys the format of Life of Fred I just think he got lost.

Thanks

I don't know if you really want to switch programs...but if you do I can not sing the praises of Teaching Textbooks enough. I love them. As soon as my kids are old enough, that is what they will be using all the way through (and, starting in March, they will go all the way down to 4th grade. Hooray!)
