My daughter will be kindergarten age next year, and thanks to the influence of this board and the people I know IRL, I won't be too incredibly formal with it. She is very structured however, and extremely eager to "start school" so I may start with a select few formalities including catechesis. My question is, is there a "program" out there, or do people generally create their own, or what? I know that starting in Kindergarten we could start sending her to parish religious education classes, but I will not be doing that. What would they be learning in that realm? We live a life centered around the faith, as my husband is a FOCUS missionary and everyone she knows is talking about the faith, she knows many, many formal prayers and we regularly read Bible stories, talk about Saints, etc. I'm just not sure what should be done aside from what she would get in family life anyway! Thanks!

I'm way biased onto Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. You might see if there are any atriums near you.

It's perfect for starting the little ones out in the faith gently.

I'm all for CGS as well.
There is a school publisher in Australia that has actually published something that is VERY close to CGS... wish I could remember where I would have put the website..... They break it down year by year.
Moira Farrel has Home Catechesis Manuals that are not strictly CGS (and as the level goes up, the more they veer from CGS, but are excellent in their own right) for sale at Our Father's House.
We also have the Seton K-en religion book, but because my son does CGS and "My First Catechism" as well as the living of the faith as you've described, the Seton book is just too redundant for us, so I save it for long car rides.
We also, just for fun, do the Our Lady of Victory K-en religion - it is not a textbook, but a small grouping of other books (including a picture Bible, Leading the Little Ones to Mary, Chats with God's Little Ones and a Rosary booklet). I really like this one because it is NOT a textbook. You purchase the books and the $10 lesson plans (which are not entirely necessary but do help to break it down in pieces and my son loves to place an X in the boxes under each day as he completes it - that, combined with the fact that I love these books anyway, is my primary factor for doing the lesson plans portion :)
That's more than my 2 cents, but I love this topic!

Found it!
To Know, Love and Serve
Pretty much all the information I have on it is included on the website. If you click on the books (starts with K-en in the upper left corner), it will then list the chapter numbers and you can see doctrine, etc for every chapter (not every chapter includes every piece).
The only thing I would say about this book as far as connection with CGS is that it is "based" on CGS, but in true CGS, we don't read Old Testament stories (I do those outside of the atrium with my son, but to really understand the stories, the child should have a decent sense of time/chronology) - with that said, I would still have used it if I weren't able to take the CGS training.
Someone did e-mail me some sample pages (I think from the K-en book). Let me know if you'd like to see them.
(and I don't know what shipping would be to the US from Australia!)

I have some suggestions, Andrea...but I've got to get to my housework...I'll try to get back here later tonight before the boards close!
I really can't wait to take a look at CatholicMommy's link!

We need an icon for head banging here, just picture me instead. That is the program our Bishop bought in to our schools a few years ago and I keep meaning to check it out. I have even asked the RE coordinator at the local primary school and she has said 'anytime'. Anything to do with Msgr Peter Elliott is 'dinky di'. Translation- Absolutely true to the teachings of the Church.
BTW IF you happen to follow my link, at the very bottom of the sidebar the family chatting to the Bishop is Chemai's

Andrea,
My little guy (not quite K, not quite Preschool, just enjoying all sorts of things) doesn't sit still for much, but he does love reading. I keep a basket of devotional type books that we read together. I don't do any formal catechesis this young, but I find that their hearts are so welcoming of Jesus right now and they embrace gentle stories so well. I do love CGS, and we enjoy that as well.
My favorite books to read:
Treasure Box Books
Manners in God's House
Their Hearts Are His Garden
Jesus and Mary
God's Love Story
My Jesus and I
Little Acts of Grace
Leading The Little Ones to Mary
Just Like Mary
I incorporate a lot of living books. My absolute favorite source of living books for reading with the liturgical year is Catholic Mosaic by our very own Cay Gibson! I have managed to collect most of the books from Catholic Mosaic and it is the backbone of my little guy's day. If you have a good library, you could get most of the books recommended by Cay's Catholic Mosaic from there and use her guide to foster study and help springboard ideas.
A big part of our curriculum is music. Since I have no musical talent, I've found Our Musical Year to be a great help to us and our year. The book is divided into months and each month offers songs (with cd's for learning and with musical accompaniment) which coordinate with the liturgical year and the seasons and the secular calendar. I love it!!! I have Our Musical Year Level I right now, and we'll be purchasing Level II soon. I've used this book with all of my kids.
There are some great music cd's out there as well that you might consider incorporating into your day. My kids learn a lot from music - we listen in the van and throughout the day.
Music selection from Catholic Heritage Curricula(I have all of these )
And we absolutely LOVE Bread of Life, Bread of Heaven as well as My Spirit Rejoices.
Crafts help reinforce things around here...I wish I could link you, but there are a million craft ideas here in the search archives and they are all a treasure! Look up in the very right hand section top of the screen...there are a group of buttons: Active Topics, Favorites, Memberlist, Search... Use the search feature and enter the day's feast, the word "craft" and see what you can find here. The ladies here offer so much inspiration.
Hope all these ideas give you a little to run with, Andrea.

Jennifer, I love all of your ideas. Thank you for the links and suggestions. I'm going to take a look at everything you suggested right now! You are always so generous with your ideas.
CatholicMommy, I looked at the To Know, Love and Serve website but have had a hard time figuring out how to order the books! I tried the store links, but still couldn't figure it out. Have your purchased these? I was just wondering!
Thank you ladies, for the other ideas as well! I am really enjoying clicking all the links and checking out the options!

Is the Catholic Mosaic age appropriate for a Kindergartner? It's hard for me to tell, since she's my oldest, based on the book list.

Jennifer,
I followed your link for the music, and while the website works, the prices don't match so I e-mailed them and it bounced back to me. Do you know if they are still in business? I noticed that the last thing posted in their "news" section was in 2005 with website content copyright 2001. Are they still around? I hope so!
Thank you!

I'm not sure...and I panicked a bit because I really do want the Level 2...I can't get an email through either, but I'm going to try to contact them using their form.
Good news though - they are still available through Emmanuel Books.. They're on sale though...so I'm not sure what that means.
I'll come back and update if I hear from High Note Solutions.

I think so, Andrea.
I use Catholic Mosaic with all of my children - ages 4-12. We start our mornings with it.
I would really recommend checking your library first for the books. Then, you can preview first. I promise, you'll want some of these books in your home library after reading them a couple of times!
This is an older thread when Catholic Mosaic first came out but it has some very helpful info in it. And, if you really feel like researching and digging in - here's a lot of Catholic Mosaic threads from the archives to look at.

Thank you! I am going order both levels tomorrow through Emmanuel - they just sound great and exactly what my son would just eat up (he loves music and movement and how nice it would be to have such a variety in one set!).

None of it worked. It all bounced. Their home page says they're moving their website, but I don't know how old that is.

Well, I ordered, and I received my order - and Level 1 is on backorder.... I hope they can get it soon, because I ordered level 2 as well and I'll be tempted to just start using that! I ordered a bunch of other items as well and received them all - got started on Trail Guide to Geography right away! Even though it says 2nd grade to start, my son has had a strong Montessori background so really knows his geography already!
Now, for Our Musical Year...

I wrote Laura O'Kelly-Farrell (the author of "Our Musical Year" and heard from her...
Quote:
Emmanuel Books is our main Internet supplier. I am unaware if they are planning to maintain their stock after their current supply is sold. However, it is still available from us at ourmusicalyear.com; and we have no intention at the present moment to discontinue printing. Unfortunately, due to the uncertainly of the sales market and economy, all production on subsequent levels was put on hold. |
|
|
So, just wanted to update the thread to say that Levels I and II should still be available from Emmanuel Books, and if not there Laura says you should be able to order directly from their site. Also, Laura said they are aware that the website was having some problems, but she believes the site is fixed and working now.

I just jumped online to post a question about teaching Catechism to littlies and I found this thread already started! I hope this doesn't change the original idea of this thread too much but I would liike to pose another question.
I have a 7ds, 5ds, 3dd and 7 mth ds. I have used Faith and Life for a year but although the content is great I am just not into textbook curriculums. I already have Catholic Mosaic but I am after something else to supplement it. Is there anything elseapart from Moira Farrell albums which I have had trouble getting here in Australia?
Sorry about the long post, I hope this makes sense.
