I've just been talking with Mary Alice regarding the rehab visit here with her husband and they could really use your prayers. They have found out her dh needs surgery (in a few months) - which should prevent more deterioration and hopefully improve function. There are additional circumstances that make this really an emotional challenge right now and I know they could use your prayers for that. I told her I would post the request and get those powerful prayers coming. Thanks!

Praying! I've been thinking about Mary Alice because I'm hoping to meet her when we move to Kansas. I'm sorry I missed the first post.

Thank you so much, Mary, for posting this, and everybody who is praying!! Our week at Craig Hospital was in many ways very good. Ed got the BEST evaluation neurologically that he has gotten since he was there in 1977. They fixed his wheelchair so that it is comfortable for the first time, and he feels so much better. Everyone at Craig is the best at what they do, and they not only have professional expertise but they have real heart as well. The only areas they address are spinal injury and traumatic brain injury. They do it so well.
We were rather surprised to find that the reason for Ed's gradual loss of sensation, strength and function is probably (need the MRI results for final confirmation) a combination of scar tissue along the spinal column (a "tethered cord") and that he also has a cyst called a syringomyelia, both of which are gradually sapping his strength and function. There are some "side issues" which we need to pray about, but we hope that Dr. Falci will contact us this week with a definite surgery date. Ed will have the spinal surgery at Craig (don't trust anywhere else at this point) and they are telling us that we should plan to be out there for 3 to 4 weeks. Yikes!! There is a family apartment building on the hospital campus where we stayed last week which is really convenient. We can easily bring the 4 youngest as they homeschool, but my 17 y.o. goes to public school and we'll have to find places for her to stay. We have time.
We are so grateful that God led us back to Craig for answers that we weren't getting anywhere else. We are grieving the losses Ed has suffered, including having to retire from his job a year and a half ago, that would not have occurred had this been recognized earlier. Yet we both have such a peace about this surgery. The Dr. says that he has a 90% success rate that the patient will not experience any further deterioration, which sounds really good to us. There is also a 50-50 chance that Ed could have a return of some strength and function. That's pretty good too. So we're eager to clear all that stuff out of his spinal column!!
A very real blessing was Mary M.!! She helped us the most by listening to the Holy Spirit and calling me the morning that I really needed to work through some emotions and giving me such empathy and encouragement. She's a treasure. And she met us at the wonderful Denver Nature and Science Museum and treated two of my kids to a guest pass. We had a relaxing time just when we needed it at the end of the week. And what a fun museum for science-lovers!
I'll be asking for very specific prayers, ladies, when we have firm dates and surgical plans. We'll need them. I can't tell you how comforting it was, though, to hear from Mary that she had posted this for me. God is taking such good care of us.
Years ago, I prayed fervently to St. Joseph for a good Catholic husband and he sent me Ed. I am very blessed and I know it. We need to keep this terrific guy around to enjoy our children and grandchildren, and maybe great-grandchildren? The praying moms and families on this list are so tapped in to the power of God. I know we are in good hands.
From my heart,
Mary Alice in Kansas
