Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My 10yo ds NEVER seems to get much accomplished during the day. It takes him FOREVER to get the simplest of tasks done. He dawdles, goofs etc....This morning since he got up 2.5 hours ago all he has gotten done is get dressed, eat breakfast and 1 chore....I have to CONSTANTLY stay after him about EVERYTHING....school included. Of course it gets to a point he gets really irritated after the constant reminding. School is the biggest thing....I am at a loss as to what to do. Timers don't work. If I sit with him he talks and talks and talks and still gets nothing done.

Any advice???

Debbie

I have 8 and 9 year olds that are very much the same way if I leave them to their own devices. I have just accepted that I need to constantly supervise them and remind them to focus on the task at hand. I also make sure the tasks can be accomplished in short bursts, or all is a bust!

Are you willing to put a few weeks even months into it? I have one who is just like that. He is a dreamer, very creative, easily distracted by anything interesting, or not, that's around. We finally had to stay on top of him and remove each distraction as it caught his attention. Honestly, we would just walk up and take whatever it was without a word. He lost whatever it was for the rest of the day. The phrase "Is that what you are supposed to being doing now?" became a regular for us. Also, he has no privileges until all work is done. (i.e. screen time, playing with toys, playing with friends, etc.) It took a while, and we still have bad days, but we have seen great improvement and greater self-regulation. I also have to remind myself to be patient after a few days off, those are usually a rough adjustment for him. It helps if I'm not a raving, nagging lunatic. I think this is so much a part of boys at this age.   Good Luck.

Sounds like my almost 10 yr old. He really pushes my buttons. I would love to box up all the toys so that they aren't a distraction for him and the other kiddos. It takes him all day to do his school work and he has less work than the other two who are done in a few hours (2-3). You would think it would sink in that if he just did it mom would be off his case. I'm just as much at a loss as you are! It used to help if I had him look at me and then repeat what he was suppose to do but he rejects it now. He just keeps getting more difficult. He can't even eat most days with the family. He is in his own little world.

Anyway, I don't have any words of wisdom but just know you are not alone.

My nine year old dd is the same way. It took her 6HOURS to do her math the other day. That was the last straw. I now have a schedule for her that lays everything out for her. If said thing does not get done in said time slot it gets done on her free time, instead of t.v. or games etc. If it does not get done Mon-Fri it gets done on Saturday uring the time she would be playing.
We have had the schedule since Tuesday and she gets it now and likes it all laid out for her. This also keeps me from nagging. All I ask is what is on your schedule for the time?
I knew I had to set up a schedule for her due to some needs issues but I did not want to be tied down like that. I am glad I did though despite my needing to adjust.
(Check with me next week to see if we still have it though,LOL)
