We were at the National Shrine for the noon Mass...it was just lovely. Theodore Cardinal McCarrick said Mass; he quoted from several beautiful Marian hymns (someone taught him to read poetry aloud properly, how nice!), talked about flying to Mary, our Mother, for all our needs, and wound up his homily with a reflection on saying "yes" every day to God. Wow.

The best part, though, was that BOTH of my children loved it all. Ds thought the music was "completely awesome" and mentioned that he loves going to Mass in big cathedrals because he feels like he's really with God.

Dd, who did NOT want to drive all that way whe she got up, loved the music, too, especially the wonderful organ. She said she wanted to go back to the Shrine for Mass soon.

We were all impressed by the perfect combination of worshipful music, humble prayer, liturgical tradition and devoutness. It was really, truly lovely.

What a fantastic way to begin the new year, don't you think?!
