In another post I mentioned that we visited the Shrine of Our Lady of La Leche. Before we went to the Shrine we visited the Cathedral and the old town, strolling through the streets peering into the shop windows... we did end up popping into a candle store and bought a courting candle for our 14 yr old Goddaughter(for her parents) . I had my beautiful Vera Bradley backpack on my back ,
my backpack My pattern is Kensington.
which my mother recently gave to me, and the shopkeeper, who was wearing a V.B apron asked me where I got my bag. I answered and she told me that Vera Bradley is her sister's company. Her sister is actually named Barbara, but she named the company after their mother. She said their mother raised them all to never work under anyone else. There were 4 girls and 2 boys. This shopkeeper makes and sells her own candles. She dips her candles and pours scented wax(that was melted in a crock pot) into votive molds. She forms roses out of wax ......

oh that's neat Stephanie, she has real bayberry candles.. I was looking for one a while back.. wasn't sure and was trying to find somethign with a bayberry scent.. thinking it would be Christmasy without being spicy or heavily pine/fir. But couldn't find anything that was just bayberry.

Makes me want to go to St Augustine and shop! It's a good day trip for us but maybe we'll head up soon while the weather is still good in FL

Oh, Stephanie. Your trip to the shrine and then this! Such a wonderful trip! Now I do wish she would do purple in her palette, then it would be perfect!

I have wonderful memories of our trip to the shrine and a day of browsing St. George Street shops. I was hugely pregnant with our 8th child then and we were such a spectacle! Sounds like a lovely day Stephanie, I'm interested in learning more about the courting candles!

Jenn, I think she would do any color you like. She does take special orders.
As soon as we download the photos I will post one.
We made a day trip from Gainesville, where I used to go to the Univ. way back when. One short day is not enough for St. Augustine. Maybe when dh comes again during the Easter holidays we will make another trip up north.

Ohhh! We were just there! I think this is such a beautiful little chapel.
I'm jealous that you got to go to the candle shop. I wanted to go, but we just didn't end up having enough time.

Oh my goodness I am so excited - we are going to St. Augustine's this April - we may even be there for Easter - we will be camping at the state park down there.
Dh will be fishing and I will be taking in the sights! Any other must sees?
I first read about St. Augustine in one of Seton's little history books. Dh asked if I would try Florida (long drive from NJ)and I said how about St. Augustine - he checked into the fishing and gave it a big.

We were only there about 7 hours, which only made me eager to return.
There is a tourist information office across the street from the Cathedral. There you can get some ideas and make a plan of action if you are staying several days. Otherwise, check out internet info. if you only plan to spend 1 day there, as time is too short for all the history and interesting spots in St. Augustine. We hung out in the Old Town, went through the spanish settlement museum and from there walked to the Shrine. As we returned to the old Town it was already 5pm and many Museums and boutiques close up shop. We would love to return to St. Augustine.

We sat at the Shrine, in front of the alter and watched dophins jump and swim in the bay - we will never forget that. Browsing St. George Street was fun - so much to see, but very tourist-y. We toured St. Augstine Cathedral. I would so love to go back.

I am a native of Jacksonville (living in Texas now), which is only about 40 minutes from St. Augustine, so I almost consider St. Augustine a hometown as well.
As everyone has mentioned, the mission grounds and Cathedral are always the best part of any visit. I don't believe the fort has been mentioned (although you really can't miss it when you're in old town). Also, it is fun to climb to the top of the lighthouse (although that is a short drive from the old town - not walkable).
There is an Orthodox shrine on St. George street that is always a must-visit when I'm in town. It is very beautiful.
There are some funny "touristy" things around town too - a Ripley's Believe it or Not museum, a wax museum, the Fountain of Youth, etc. We enjoyed the alligator farm as children.
You really cannot go wrong with a visit to St. Augustine.
