Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Yesterday my family gathered to celebrate a milestone- my nephew Colby has been cancer free for 5 years.

About this time five years ago we also gathered to celebrate Colby and offer him love and prayers as he prepared to travel across country for cancer treatment. At age 9 he was diagnosed with advanced thyroid cancer, which is so rare in children that there was no doctor on the east coast who would treat him. My sister took him to doctor in California, finally, for surgery and treatment. They were there a couple of months.

When Colby was in the hospital preparing for surgery, a priest stopped by to anoint him. This priest, as it turned out, was the pastor of the nearby Catholic church, St. Kolbe's. Colby was in surgery over five hours.

During the long recovery time, my sister went out of the hospital one day and walked to a nearby gift shop. She was tired, discouraged and scared. During surgery, Colby had over 300 lymph nodes removed, and all but two tested positive for cancer.

My sister browsed in the store for awhile, until finally the shop owner came out and asked her, "Why did you come into my shop today?"

My sister was embarrassed- she had no extra money and did not plan to buy anything, so she mumbled that she was "just looking".

But the shop owner surprised her. She shook her head and said, "No. That isn't why you came in here. You came in here today so that I could tell you your son Colby will be healed."

And then she pulled down the neck of her sweater, showed my sister a scar on her neck and said, " I know this because I am also a thyroid cancer survivor. The Lord sent you here today so I could tell you that Colby will be fine".

She then told my sister how she had been diagnosed at age 18 in South America, and there were no doctors who could treat her, and her parents were told she would die. They sent her to California to stay with relatives, and she had been there ever since, for many years.

After five years, this story still gives me chills and makes me cry. And to see Colby yesterday- so full of life and so excited about his party... well, God is good. So very, very good.

We are very, very thankful

Wow, Melinda ... this story is beautiful! Cancer is so darn insidious ... some of us it takes and some of us are spared! Who knows why God does this ...

But this story is one that definitely needs to be published/filmed or something! God is so good.

It is so hard to understand; I agree. This coming fall my dh will be celebrating 20 years cancer free, and he had liposarcoma, an especially nasty type.
