Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

DD was given some of these by my sister in law, sigh.

I explained that we didn't believe in these sorts of things, that we believe that only Jesus can take away our worries. DD didn't really get why she couldn't therefore have the dolls. I didn't want to get into stuff about worshipping false gods etc.

What would you do/have done? I'm sure s-i-l didn't mean anything by it, just thought they looked 'quite sweet'.

Now I don't know what to do with the wretched things. So far they're hidden, but should I throw them away/burn them? Am I overreacting?

Elizabeth,

I think that is an interesting point. I had never thought of them that way before.

They do look very cute hot glued in a row on a large barrette. Or maybe you could think of some other craft to do with them, like a simplearpillera?

I'm sorry they caused additional stress on Christmas!

I think I'd use them in a craft project, too, and explain the old "folk tale" tradition as something that we know to be unnecessary because of our Christian faith, which was brought to Guatemala by the Spanish. Then I'd just have fun with the craft project.

Welll....I think burning them might be a little extreme...

Much like the article you linked to said, these are often used by children - who can't sleep. I think fear of the night / dark is a pretty common fear of children no matter what country they grow up in. I know of many people who used "monster spray" when their children were "scared of monsters" at bedtime. I think this is just a different culture's form of "monster spray." (don't forget, also, that Guatamala is predominately Catholic, so there are probably many devout homes with worry dolls and no false-god worship occuring.)

Like others suggetsed, use them in a craft project or as a cultural learning experience.

Of course, if they make you personally that uncomfortable, then get rid of them. But, I would caution against giving something more power/influence than it deserves, too.
