Have any of you made your own purses?
My friend was showing me one she made from her husband's uniform and some quilter's calico, but it's very floppy. We weren't sure what to put in it to give it more body. She thought cardboard, and I suggested batting.
What do you think?

cardboard.. it'll break down over time with washing but batting won't really give you "body" it'll just be fatter and still flop.

I've made several with fusible fleece in between the outer layer and the lining. On the bottom, I insert a piece of thin plywood. They stand up nicely. I've never machine washed mine though b/c I put fringe trim on them.

My daughter has been making purses this fall, and I was going to recomend the fusible fleece also for some structure to the purse as well. To really stiffen up the bottom or sides, the patterns we have recommend a heavy weight stabilizer. Something like this - Peltex

When I knit purses I do a cardboard wrapped with packing tape so the edges are smooth and don't tear the knitting. I fit it to the bottom of the bag and then can easily remove whenever I need to wash the bag.

I've seen the Peltex used to keep things from being floppy in purses.

We've used sheets of that plastic (thin) that quilters use to make their own templates. It must have a name? Anyone? The people at a good fabric store will know what you mean. It is easy to cut and won't break down the way cardboard does.

I use decabond--one layer on the face fabric and one layer on the lining. My purses hold up for a looong time! Here is a photo of one I made last fall. It is standing up without anything inside, so that may give you an idea of how firm the decabond is. I do find that if you wash the purse, it will go "soft." You can buy dceabond at fabric stores. HTH
