Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am not Catholic myself. Dh is and we are trying our best to raise our children as Catholic. I still have SO much to learn though. Here is my question..DS and DH just went to their SEASONAL Reconciliation at church. DS is 10 so this is still very new to him. Should we discuss anything with him regarding this and the Penance he was given to do by the priest? Do we leave it up to him to do as he should even though he is still young and very new to all of this.

Thanks
Debbie

Debbie, I have always let my boys be responsible for their own penances. I will sometimes try to help with an examination of conscience before the sacrament, but what goes on inside the confessional is between then penitent and God. If a child wants to discuss his sins or his penance, that's OK, but I don't ask. With four boys, we sometimes have penance contests, though.

Actually, at some of the reconciliation services I've been to, the congregation recited a communal penance and the priests didn't assign individual penances. In that case, it would be unnecessary to ask if they have done their penance.

I usually prod my 3rd grader with an examination of conscience...just kind of read through one with him to prompt his memory a bit.

A really great resource we have is "Family Centered Examination of Conscience". There is an examen for moms, dads, and kids in there. We bought ours from CHC years ago, I don't even know if they still sell it...

Oh, cool! I looked on their website and it is out of print, but it says they will have it soon as an ebook. This is great news, because I think ours is MIA. I was looking for it a couple of months ago and couldn't find it!
