Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I forget. How long is it usually from seeing the little white bumps under the gums till they break through? Or can it vary a lot?

She seems to have been teething since she was about 7 weeks old! She's now 3 1/2 months and we probably first saw the bumps a couple of weeks ago. They're clear enough I have to put my finger in there and touch them to be sure they've not already broken through. They do seem more prominent now than when I first noticed them.

Our boys got their first teeth at 7 months and 6 months.

I don't have as much experience as other moms, Theresa, but I can tell you that Katie still has no teeth at 9 1/2 months old and I have seen those swollen, white gums for several months now.

My first dd had 4 teeth by the time she was 4 months old, so obviously it can vary much from child to child.

It was always fast for Ian, once we saw the bumps the teeth cut through right away. With Noel it takes much longer ... weeks longer. I think it just varies by kid.

For us it was many months ordeal. All my children were late cutting teeth, but early showing clear signs of teething. (The old wives tales said I let them gum too much stuff and toughened up their gums so the teeth didn't come through easily ). We survived on a technique of using a frozen washrag or piece of ice that I could use to gently rub the gums to numb the gums before nursing so they'd actually fill the belly before pulling away with teeth pain. If they had too many things going at once - tired, hungry and sore teeth we were in for a long, long meltdown much like cholic only not so predictable in terms of time of day. We tried to avoid having hunger be one of the things - it was the one we had the most control over.

I think it can vary a lot. Mine have all been right around the 6 month mark when they broke through with the first one. Usually I could feel the tooth under the gum for 2 or 3 weeks before it came through, but they all started having teething symptoms (frantic chewing, drooling) around 4 months. My 6 1/2 month old just cut her second tooth yesterday! :)
