I'm new to the world of baby girls (well, except when I was one.) So, when do they start liking dolls? My daughter will be 4 months old on Dec. 21. Obviously it would have to be a safe doll for her age and she wouldn't sleep with it. I just love the idea of getting her a sweet little doll of her own, but I'm not sure if she's really too young for it. Do they like them as soon as they are interested in faces and the doings of people around them? We only have stuffed animals and honestly I am too protective of her health yet not a good enough housekeeper to let her actually touch any of the ones we have when her hands are in her teething mouth so much of the time 
She definitely likes people, "talks" a lot and follows us with her eyes. We thought she was "talking to" a baby she saw on a diaper box the other day  I think she even recognizes our 6yo as "the one who always sticks his tongue out" because from an early age she's done that when she sees him yet doesn't even respond that much when I stick my tongue out at her. So maybe she would be delighted with a little baby doll. Or maybe she wouldn't care all that much

We bought one of these last Christmas for our 1 yr old. It has been very durable!

Oompa toys has lots of soft, organic dolls, some of which are also useful teethers. A Toy Garden also has many.
I have given "real" baby dolls for a first birthday present, but they didn't start really liking the dolls until they were closer to two and started imitating me.

Probably around 18-24 months, my girls have started playing with dolls and been interested in them.

I gave tiny (smaller than my hand) sized stuffed cloth dolls.. homemade.. basically just the outline shape with faces and the body was the clothes.. to my little one last Christmas. just perfect for a 1 yr old to be able to hold with 1 hand, and she could chew on them or play with almost like dollhouse dolls. And they didn't make noise in church and were easy to tuck into my pocket or purse.
