Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Please pray for my dad who had a heart attack today....
that the surgery he is undergoing right now will be successful, and that he won't worry too much about my mom while he's recovering.
Thanks so much!
Sue

Thank you all for your prayers for my dad. We really appreciate them so much!
He had quintuple-bypass surgery on Saturday, developed some internal bleeding on Sunday so had to be opened up again for more surgery. Right now he seems to be recovering okay.
It was really awful sitting by the phone last weekend, 3,000 miles away.
Five of my siblings, my mom and some of my dad's siblings were there, so he was surrounded by lots of love and support. His priest-brother gave him the sacrament of the sick beforehand. Big families really are wonderful.
Everyone was able to head to the nearby cathedral for mass during his surgery so the timing was nice.
There were many small blessings, not the least of which was his angel 'southern gentleman' surgeon, recruited to Seattle from Norfolk.
Since my dad is in great shape, eats carefully and exercises, it seems the heart attack is all due to stress. He is mom's caregiver and doesn't like to ask for/accept help from his children, doesn't want to be a burden..etc.
I’m thinking of flying back next week when he’s back home again. Our homeschooling will suffer, but I don’t want to have any regrets.
Thanks again, all of you, for your prayers and support!

Thank God his recovery is going well. I will continue to pray for him. When my dad had his bypass surgery 6 ( ) years ago, I was in TX and he was in NY. It was awful not being with him, fortunately, I was able to get up for a short visit very soon after. If you can manage it, it's very comforting to be there in person.

Oh my goodness, Sue! I missed this - how frightening! I will pray for your dad's recovery. It is so stressful to be any distance from family when medical emergencies occur...praying for you as well!

Thanks so much
Well... the spiritual and emotional support is there, but unfortunately most of my siblings work outside the home, and are unable to do the "practical" caregiving. They help when they can, but it's hard.
I may be flying out to the West Coast and bringing my mom back to Virginia with me, for three weeks so my dad can heal in peace and quiet. It will be hard on her though... she gets confused and anxious when her routine changes, although she still knows us all.

Right now I'm praying that we'll make the right decision for everyone involved. Life can be so complicated!

Praying for your Dad's recovery. If it is possible I would definitely go see him... the kids will learn so much more by your example of how a good daughter treats her parents than they would ever learn in a book!
I am speaking from the experience of having lost my own Dad suddenly this past April and not having the opportunity to have another visit before he went home to heaven. I hope it works out for you to take care of your mom... we will keep praying for the graces you will need.

Thank you again for all your prayers for my dad. He's recovering beautifully- the nurses are amazed!

All of us siblings have decided (with the counsel of my mom's geriatric physician) that my dad will heal better if my mom is not in the same city... she thinks she's "helping" him, but has a tendency to makes things worse with her fussing.

So, she will be flying out to Virginia next week to stay with us for awhile so my dad can continue recovering in peace and quiet.
Please pray that 1) she handles the 5-hour flight from the West Coast; and 2) that I will be a good example of patience and forbearance
And that this will be a true example to the kids of the other spectrum of "pro-life"- instead of cute, cuddly babies, the sometimes-frustrating elderly.
God bless you all,
Sue

Praying for your intentions, and keeping you, your family, your mother, and your father in prayer over the next few weeks while your dad recovers.

I kind of know how difficult it is--my mom was in a similar situation with being far away, but all the close siblings not being able (or willing) to step up and take an active role in the practical care. There was a lot sacrifice of time and travel on her part.

May your father's recovery continue to go well, and may the time with your mother be filled with many unexpected blessings!
