Each winter we have such a wonderful variety of birds that come to our feeders. This year, my goal is to get a chickadee to eat out of my hand. Has anyone done it? Does anyone know of any good books with helpful tips?

Oh, do I have the book for you!! Its called Hand-feeding Backyard Birds by Hugh Wiberg. For about $7 you can get this great book. Type it into Amazon and it comes right up. (Someday I'll figure out how to do the link thing). Go for it and please let me know if you're successful. I'm not in the position to do it this year with so many little ones. You'll love this book! Someday I'm going to try it.

Hey Donna! This is such a fun thing to do, and very easy.
In fact, these little fellows have such a good memory that they will come back to your hand year after year! Uploaded below is my booklet on hand-feeding birds. A much better (longer, more thorough) book is Handfeeding Backyard Birds.
2005-11-17_190201_birdBooklet1.doc
I had to edit the booklet to fit it into the allotted file space, so if you'd like the whole thing, let me know. It is really missing just a few photos and cover, resources, and table of contents--no big deal.

I've wanted to do this for years.....chickadees are my favorite bird....along with hummingbirds.
Thanks for the upload.....and, yeah absolutely, I'd love the entire booklet with pictures.

Donna (and anyone who wants it) send me a note to me at macbeth@optonline.net and I'll send the booklet as two attachments.

Great booklet, MacBeth -- thanks so much for sharing. Being down South, we get so many birds in the Fall/Winter that this would be a great living book to do with my young 'uns!

Get a photo, Donna! It's such a hands-on close-up easy-to-do nature project, isn't it?

I thought about that, too. But....my hands were both occupied and there was no one close enough to hear me whispering, "Get the camera!" Next time I'll be sure to have someone standing close by.

Oh, I wish we were there too!! Donna, what a wonderful moment for you! I've never done this, though I would love to some day!
How long did you practice? Did you have to wait long before a bird approached? My oldest tried this one day for about 20 minutes before he gave up. (I think he was fidgeting a lot though.)
Oh my goodness! Can I mention this in Field Day?

Ooh. I need to know the details, too. Since reading Crinkleroot's Guide to the Birds in the spring, my 4.5 year old has been ACHING to get a chickadee to eat out of her hand.
Whenever she gets the whim, she gets a handful of birdfood and sits out by our feeders - for about 30 seconds. Okay, maybe she lasts a full, squirming, 5 minutes out there - but she tries so hard and it's the cutest thing!

Well....gotta admit, there was nothing earth shattering that I had to do. I just went out to the feeders when they were rather low on seed, and held some black oil sunflower seeds in my hand, probably about 5 minutes. There were 7 chickadees sitting in the tree. They slowly, one by one, came closer, then one flew onto my hand. I never really practiced. I do sit outside often near the feeders and I am filling them every morning, so perhaps the birds are used to seeing me there. (Birds are my passion. Did I mention that I usually feed them before I feed my kids in the morning ...only because the birds get up earlier than the kids do .)
It really was cool. Going to try again today.

Sure.
I feel so out-of-the-loop. I haven't had a spare minute to update my blog in weeks, and I am missing all the great carnivals going around. Kitchens and nature, two of my favorite subjects...and I am missing it. I hope with the return of a school schedule, I can get back to blogging regularly.
I truly wanted to post something for the nature study carnival...I have so many awesome pictures from this summer...well, maybe next time around.
