I am reposting this here, because I wasn't sure if it would be seen ...
I just can't get over how beautiful this CD is.
During a catholic school liturgy I noticed that very few children can actually sing. The choir director encouraged the kids to sing louder and so they just started yelling more or less. The music teacher has a nice , strong voice, but she has never studied voice. She tries to find upbeat, hip church songs to get the kids interested. "Awesome God"...The girls who do have nice voices in choir are singing more and more with an "american superstar" voice, iykwim? (singing 1 syllable words with at least 2 syllable) I digress. The actual point of this post is to tell you about a great new find for me. I think this kind of musical recording would be so helpful to teach our children to sing, especially when moms don't have such a beautiful voice(like me). Yesterday I received a wonderful gift.
The musician's voice is so clear and pure. I just love the arrangements and it encourages you to sing along. For St. Nicholas fans, there are at least 3 St. Nick songs. Has anyone ever heard any of the other recordings?

She has a very pretty voice. What a neat website, thanks!
I haven't studied voice in college, but was in choir (a 5 day per week class) all 4 years I was in high school, with an excellent teacher who did teach me how to sing properly. I've been in many choirs, including my husband's right now, and our children as well. I have given informal voice lessons to others in the homeschooling community, and my own children to some degree.
I know EXACTLY about what you're speaking. It drives me CRAZY how kids sing with a pop voice. It drives me crazy how people don't sing at Mass, and it breaks my heart actually.
Anyway, it is a nice resource. I love listening to beautiful voices, and point them out to our kids as we hear them! There are many great artists out there that illustrate beautiful and proper voice technique, even for someone who doesn't want to study voice, but still wants to sing well.

I wish I could hear it...computer problems opening audio files over here.
But I agree, I can't stand poorly done children's cds. Breathy voices, using talking voices instead of sweet singing voices, pop style, trying to sound "childlike"--lowering standards instead of inspiring good quality.
You hit on one of my peeves...

Back again. I do recognize several of the old Christmas carols. But the others seem to be based on Waldorf traditions?
What can you tell me about the Advent songs? Are they more secular, based on light and other features? Do they mention Christ coming or just a general seasonal song?
I saw two of the St. Nicholas ones featured at St. Nicholas Center:

Kind Old Man St. Nicholas
Just hovering trying to see if I should click and buy.

Jenn, the musician does have a waldorf background and the songs that she wrote herself do have that Waldorf flavor.
Advent verse for Lighting the Candles
"We light one candle shining bright
Upon this Holy Advent night
Fill our hearts with loving might
Lead us to Christmas Day's brilliant light!
and the following song is full of light and does not speak of awaiting ...
...but....the next song talks about preparing physically during Advent as in finding the right Christmas tree in the woods and wrapping presents, dipping candles and baking cookies , and ends with the 4th verse:
"Count off the days one by one, as Christmas Day draws near,
Make my heart a dwelling place for Christ to enter here!"

I think the only selection that probably would not work for Catholic families - especially if your advent wreath has the three purple and one pink candle - is "The Four Lights of Advent" which is suited more to the four red candles and shows a progression through creation - one verse for stones, plants, animals, and then humans.
The collection has my most favorite Advent carol - "People, Look East" - which is in our hymnal at church.
There is also a beautiful 15th century carol that I had never heard before - "Maria Wandered Through a Wood"
1.Maria wandered through a wood - Ky-ri-e-lei-son, Through a barren wood of barren thorn,
That seven years no bloom had born, Jesus and Maria.
2.What did she lightly carry there? (continue as above)
3. And as the child was lightly borne (continue as above).

Maria Walks Amid the Thorn was featured in Maria Von Trapp's Around the Year with the Trapp Family for Advent. I'd love to hear a recording. You're not helping my wallet...

This is our all time favorite Advent song in German. I have to tell you though....the German is even better! I'll give you a literal translation of the 2nd and 3rd verses.
2. Was trug Maria unter ihrem Herzen? Kyrieleison
