Does anyone have any advice about exercise equipment for children/teens? My inlaws have given my children money for Christmas and suggested that we buy them some indoor exercise equipment like a bike or running machine or punching bag. I am clueless - does anyone know what would be beneficial to children and help lots of boys work off energy. Also what would be a lower cost place to purchase?

Marilyn,
We have a rebounder that was recommended by someone on this board. A search on the internet should show you cheapest prices. Ours was around $200 I think. A rebounder is a mini-trampoline but extra bouncy compared with those in sporting good stores. Ours gets used daily. Also, you may consider a large exercise ball. Our boys jump over/sit on/bounce on/do school work on, etc., these balls.
Love,
Kelly

Hi Kelly - it was me who recommended the rebounder!!! Actually my husband is looking for something else which will help the children maintain fitness through the winter as they will not be doing team sports through the winter.
We do have a space problem though - so it would have to be very streamlined.
Thanks

My kids roller blade and rip stick in the basement. I would nix the punching bag unless you get a really big one, ours was frequently used as a swing....though your children are probably better behaved then mine.
We have an exercise bike, I never use but the kids sometimes hop on in and pedal a bit. There are lots of DVD's out there for kids fitness.
What about the Y? Could you get a short term membership there? I know that is not at home, but thought I would throw it out there.
As for low price, you can check on Craig's list, otherwise try Sear's.

My dc used our treadmill, under strict supervision.
Jump-roping is probably the biggest hit at our house! Boys and girls alike!
Renting kids fitness videos/dvds from the library was our next favorite. Last winter they did kids calistenics(spelling way off there!), yoga, pillates, and dance mats. It was hard to find a dance mat that just had beats and no lyrics, though.
Since we live in a snowy climate, my dc are responsible for shoveling our very long driveway, sidewalk, and the sidewalk of the neighbors on each side of us. You can find a really good child size shovel at a hardware store.
You could invest in some good outer wear, and have the older dc offer to walk dogs in the neighborhood-especially those of the elderly.
Have you tried Amazon with the title of kids and fitness and indoors?
Good Luck! let us know what you came upwith!

Is this the type of rebounder you all are referring to? This may be perfect for our family but I want to make sure I am not buying some lesser one. Thanks!

I thought I would come back and update. We actually ordered and paid for a "conversion table top" - which would convert our pool table to a table tennis table. (my kids love table tennis). But Sears messed up badly and we still don't have it. We did get our money back - and so our alternative was this boxing bag and gloves. I can't wait to throw a few punches myself!

we have a rebounder (got it from craigslist for 5 bucks) and a body bag. my dh also has a hanging bag for boxing (what are those called?) but the kids are pretty young for it. the rebounder gets the most action. sometimes i send a kid over to jump and recite a times table. it's really nice to get the jumpies out of kids so they can settle down and work for a while.

We use a mini tramp and a yoga ball. The yoga ball can be sat on for bouncing on and rolled on while laying on the tummy. We also had someone recommend sitting on a yoga ball while doing math (something about that is suppose to increase concentration???) And, while watching tv to increase upper body cordination. Not that you have to be watching tv, its just another opportunity to use it. hth

That's interesting I've never seen a free standing boxing bag. DH and I have talked about one of those for awhile now. The free standing would be much easier then one that hangs. Let us know how you and the kids like it! I think we need some more indoor exercise equipment also. The boys have way too much energy when they can't get outside!
