Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Our dishwasher and oven have both come to the end of their lives and have to be replaced in the next couple of weeks. (I have tried living without a dishwasher for a while - and it is so hard) Also we had some tiles fall out in a bathroom and I am so praying that there is no major dry wall work as we just do not have the budget - but just grouting and sealing that we can do. Please pray that we find some good affordable deals around Thanksgiving and make wise decisions - and that I have the energy to go shopping!

Update a year later - see below!!

Oh dear Marilyn. We just bought a dishwasher this week...I wanted to cry by the time we left the store, I was so tired and sick. And I think the heating element is going out on our oven...so I really know your pain, and I'll be praying.

Praying, Marilyn.

Suggestion -- if you can, do most if not all of the shopping online. For instance, Sears has a "telescoping feature" that allows you to narrow down your choices. They also have a Dishwasher Buying Guide. You don't have to buy at Amazon but you can check out the reviews there to help you.

(Only) If you have a lot of time, Gardenweb's Appliance Forum has lots of discussion you can peek into and participate in if you want.

My favorite, ConsumerSearch, is a review of the reviews (Consumer Reports, JD Powers, etc.) so you're seeing compiled results for whatever you need.

Those are the tools I used when we last shopped for a major appliance, so when we walked into the store we just gave them the model # and color we wanted, asked a couple more questions to confirm what we already knew, did a quick touch-feel test to see that the unit was really what we wanted (engineer hubby has to look a bit into the innards of things to decide), and made the purchase.

Good luck!

Oy! Why do they always die in a pair. Last year our microwave and dishwasher died simultaneously -- 2 months after we replaced our replacement prone washer and dryer. I was so frazzled and tired of thinking of kitchen appliances I literally called our local appliance store and bought a microwave over the phone! Not something I'd necessarily recommend, but how many features can a microwave have???? I was pregnant, tired of hunting and frankly, just didn't care! I'd recommend Stef's more thoughtful route.

I'm praying with much empathy, Marilyn! Hope you guys can find something that fits the kitchen, your budget and your needs!

Thanks for prayers everyone. I was too nauseous to go shopping this weekend - so we are hoping to go next weekend - I did do some research online and make some calls. I am hoping to go to Home Depot which is only 5 minutes away. We are not looking for top of the line ( I will have to wait a while for my nice Bosch stainless steel dishwasher!!!) - just good value with some essential features.

Please say a quick prayer - still no appliances - the time has come - I can't keep using possible flood and electrical hazards - just that I can make it to the store without being and for wisdom to make the right choice.

Thank you!

Praying for you, Marilyn. I wish I could make some recommendations. We just bought a Bosch for our home in May and I do love it! Good luck in making your decision.

Please would you say a special prayer - I finally chose a dishwasher and bought it last week - after tons of research, measuring etc. Anyway - the sales guy got the measurements wrong (the one we chose had an additonal top attachment) - so when they tried to install today they could not Please pray that I have no trouble getting all my money back plus installation fees (it is Lowes - so should be fine)- that it will be sorted tomorrow and that I will have the energy to start looking again. Thank you so much.
