Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I've been asked to. Does anyone have any ideas about how to be a good one? What sorts of things did you do?

Kathleen

Being a proxy sponsor one year was life changing for me. I sat down weekly with him and worked on whatever his assignments were. It was mostly reading and conversation, but there were also 100 questions he had to answer and I made my library available for research and gave him some hints on where to look.

The life changing part came 2 days before Confirmation Day when a homily convinced me that I was not in a state of grace and NEEDED to go to confession. There were no sheduled ones and I had always avoided making an appointment. I couldn't let him down by standing in for his sponsor when I wasn't in a state of grace (and I was sorely tempted) so I bit the bullet and made an appointment for confession. It helped me overcome a major hurdle in my own spiritual life which makes me so thankful!

I have been a sponsor since then and have stuck with these basics:
be a good role model
pray for your confirmand
meet regularly to help him prepare
don't disappear after confirmation day
