Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

ISI George Washington essay contest

As a reminder, students are asked to consider at least two elements of Washington's life and identity that eventually found expression in the life and identity of America. Essayists are asked also to explore how those characteristics have been strengthened or weakened in the American consciousness since Washington's time and what this suggests about American character. Of course, this is a particularly intriguing question with the recent, historical presidential election in mind.

Parents, grandparents, teachers, tutors, coaches, and guidance counselors we hope that you will encourage the children and students with whom you have been entrusted to consider participating in this wonderful opportunity. In a time when the spirit of American patriotism and zeal is waning, and often sneered at, when the identity of American politics is frought with the ugly rhetoric of personal attacks and disparaging ad campaigns, it is important, now perhaps as much as any time since World War II, that our young people begin to closely consider the ideals and wisdom and character upon which our nation was built and which were surely embodied in our first President, George Washington.

We look forward to reading many insightful and spirited essays from America's next scholars!

Sincerely,
Andrew Kern, President
The CiRCE Institute
