Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

When there is someone that you truly felt was a devout Catholic, but then they openly show their support for Obama and tell your kids they voted for him.

I was shocked when she told my kids that. They have heard the church's message. They know I feel a vote for Obama was morally wrong. What should I say to them?

I will be praying for Obama now that he has been elected, but his policies on abortion and the fact that he voted against the Born Alive Infants Act makes me sick.

I think I would emphasize that voting is a private decision and that, in true Christian charity, the best possible thing to do would be to pray for that person, all voters and our elected officials. Then, I would talk about ways to help ensure that FOCA is not passed and that Catholic hospitals and doctors and pharmacists can practice their faith AND their profession. Again, prayer is key to this. I've been thinking long and hard about active involvement (March for Life, for ex.), but I know for sure there will be a lot of extra praying going on at my house.

Maybe some of the Catholics who voted for Obama will turn out to be a force for good when FOCA is brought to Congress again! Let's pray it will be so.

Well, first of all, I would have her explain to your children. If she won't, or can't, then I would explain to your children that many people were really swayed by Obama's message of "hope" and "change", and that coupled with a disappointment in the pro-life movement (assuming this is a pro-life person), that she made a decision that she believed would bring about the most good.

Your kids know what you believe. They know what is of primary importance. I wouldn't try to sound judgmental, just sad. Then I would pray with them for this country and for all those who voted for him.

I pray fervently that he won't do the things he has promised to do.

I'd steer clear of addressing it with her and make sure you simply "debrief" your children.

It seems to me that Obama supporters are often blinded by something bigger than rational arguments.

Is this a charitable remark?

Thank you Sarah

I'm sorry; I edited it to be more polite. Just to be clear... was the 'Obamite' term uncharitable (in which case I might see the offense and honestly didn't mean that) or the statement about his supporters being blinded?

Im not sure either bit was more palateable than the other. People who support Obama may be blind, some are Im sure. Others may have decided he is a good man (with views which they prefer he didnt hold) who is emminently more capable of leadership than his competition.

***MODERATOR'S FINAL NOTE***

As Moderators, we are aware of the tumult surrounding the recent election - we've felt it in our own families. We are also homeschooling moms ourselves with families and needs beyond this board. We are not a policing agency. We count on you, the member to self-police statements and always, always seek to foster an Atmosphere of Respect.

Atmosphere of Respect wrote:
Now, while we make every effort to be tough on topics in order to learn from charitable back and forth when appropriate, we place a higher priority on being tender with the people involved. This tenderness especially looks to avoid detraction and concerns all people to include members and moderators, those on the message board and off, those making headlines and personal family members, and those of faiths that are not Catholic, to name a few.

We've voted for whomever we thought (prayed, discerned, hoped) was the best candidate, the election is over, we have a new president-elect. Our job as Americans is to work for the good of the country. Our job as Catholics is to keep building a culture of life. Our job as Catholic homeschooling moms on this board is to keep this board respectful, courteous, and informative.

We are so grateful and encouraged by the many posts offering positive perspectives, prayers for the future, and of course action items for involvement in the pro-life movement. These discussions will always be welcome here.

We have asked repeatedly in multiple threads that a tone of charity always be taken. In How We Moderate we state:

How We Moderate wrote:
If a member attacks the Catholic faith or another person, moderators will skip the above steps and quickly edit or delete posts or lock and delete the thread immediately.

Any post that is prefaced "moderators can delete this if they like" will automatically be deleted.
