With the new Narnia film coming out, I have seen a number of new books about Narnia available. I am looking for myself, not for the kids. Has anyone read these? Is there a Catholic author among them?
A Family Guide to Narnia
A Field Guide to Narnia (I like the title ) !
Journey into Narnia
Finding God in the Land of Narnia
The Heart of the Chronicles of Narnia
Aslan's Call: Finding Our Way to Narnia
Into the Wardrobe
The Way into Narnia
Further Up and Further In
Not a Tame Lion
The Keys to the Chronicles
Narnia Beckons
I have Companion to Narnia, which I read years ago and enjoyed, but I see even that has been "updated" recently.
There's also a Narnia for Dummies, but I made a vow never to buy a Dummies book...just can't get past the title .

MacBeth,
I was at Barnes and Noble last night and saw a "movie guide" (for lack of a better word) - it looked really good, interviews and big colorful pictures. I don't think it's one of the ones you mentioned, but I'm not sure. Has anyone read it? Is it as good as it looks? (I didn't have the time to check it out as thoroughly as I wanted.)
On another note, does anyone know if Lewis' Space Trilogy is in print as a one-volume edition? I couldn't find one on Amazon.

Hey Anne Marie!
I have not seen any of the movie guides, except online. I am trying to get away from the movie as I would like to be (pleasantly, I hope!) surprised by the film. But once it's out, I will look . Right now, I'm looking to maximize the spiritual impact .
I know that there was a two volume edition of the Space Trilogy, with Out of the Silent Planet and Perelandra in the same volume, but it is OOP, and there is a boxed set of all three. I have never seen all three in one volume...anyone?

Looking now, I see that one used seller at the above Amazon link claims to have a three-in-one "Pan" edition of the Trilogy. It is oop, however (Pan is an imprint of Macmillan).

Since this was posted, has anyone purchased any of these guides - or maybe got one as a Christmas present ? Would love to know what you think!

It's funny, but I did pick up two books, but they are not on the list (and the list gets longer):
First, there's Inside Narnia which I have just started. This book seems (I am halfway through chapter 1) to have many details about the background of the writing, what was going on in Lewis' life, etc.
I enjoyed The World According to Narnia, which is perfect for kids, though not Catholic (Christian). It's a breezy read through all 7 books, lightly touching on the symbolism chapter by chapter. I think this is a good introduction to literary criticism for middle schoolers.
It looks like A Guide to Narnia by Catholic Exchange, will be my next purchase. I was looking for a good Catholic Guide in the first place.
Paul Ford's Companion to Narnia is still my favorite over-all guide to who's who, and what's what.

MacBeth -- thanks for the reviews. There are so many versions out there, it's nice to have personal reviews of a few of them. The "Inside Narnia" -- is it just about TLTWTW? or does it cover all 7 like the "World According to Narnia" one does?
I'll hae to tuck a couple of thees in the Epiphany stockings!

It's just LWW, for 351 pages--longer than the book itself, and is a much more scholarly work (footnotes and all) than The World...And I have barely scratched it, so I am not sure if I like it yet .

I have a review copy of this one. I waited to read it until I saw the movie, thinking that it wa a guide to the movie, the way that Catholic Exchange did the guide to The Passion. It does mention that there is a movie, but it was clearly written before the writers could see the movie. So...all those annoying little digressions from the text aren't acknowledged or explained. I think the writers of the guide did see extensive trailers though...it's a bit confusing when they refer to the movie at times, but at other times, they're clearly talking about the book without acknowledging that the movie is different... It's worth having, I think, but it's got limitations that cahtolicexchange's guide to The Passiondid not have...

I just borrowed a copy of the Further Up and Further In unit study book from Cadron Creek. FWI, not to be confused by a different study guide with this same title.
This one is not a study guide per se, but it is a well done unit study -It covers all the books in the series so is beyond just the LWW book. Anyway it doesn't have a lot in the way of explanation or really getting any deep discussion of the books.
What it does have for each chapter of each book is:
-vocabulary and language exercises
-discussion questions (but no answers to those for the "teacher" in the answer appendix)
-Scripture reference and discussion/activites
-various activity suggestions for science, nature study, art, living skills/cooking. The art though is mostly "Draw a picture of Lucy with...." There is a nice appendix with lots of recipes, some crafts/games and recommended reading (excerts from a variety of literature to correspond with the studies). We are going to use it as a basis for a "Lion, Witch, Wardrobe" class for our co-op this spring and I think it will be great for that.
Also I did get the Catholic Exchange/Ascension Press guide that has been mentioned several times. It is a very quick read and does have good basic information/explanations. It is not really indepth but I did particualty like that it has a Catholic slant on topics like the Eucharist which obviously the other guides would not.
