Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am planning our son's 5th birthday party. He wants an "Our Lady of Guadalupe" theme, as they share a date in common.

1) Can anyone suggest a craft? He wanted to do felted balls, but I'm not sure there will be time. What else could we do that would be a bit special and fun but pretty simple and not too pricey for about 12 children aged 3-6? Help!

2) He wants to ask guests who wish to give a gift to give an item for a baby, which we would send to the Tiny Feet nuns. Does that seem rude? It would be worded "if you wish to give a gift", and we would share the reasons etc - though most of teh guests are Catholics and would get it.

3) Anyone know of child friendly mexican food. He likes beef cooked in salsa, served with tortillas and fixings, but as a mum would your heart sink confronted with that on a party table for your children?

my kids favorite would probably be nachos

and then bean burritos

as long as you didn't tell them there was salsa they'd probably eat it though

You could play "Pin the tail on the burro."

You could just do Coloring pages of OLOG or make tissue paper flowers to give to Our Lady...Here are some ideas.

Pin the stars on the mantle? Or "put the roses in Juan Diego's apron"?

Just the first couple of ideas that came to me.

I like tissue paper flowers, cheap and easy. Maybe if they do that and color an OLOG picture, they could make their own mini-shrines at home!

They could make votive candle holders for their shrines by decoupaging tissue paper onto small glass holders (inexpensive from Michaels and you can make your own mod-podge by diluting white glue with some water!).

I think your gift idea is lovely, and, if explained, is not rude at all. I know lots of kids in our area ask for pet items and donate them to the SPCA in lieu of birthday gifts...this is even nicer!

My kids were raised on Mexican food! When young, they liked to build their own tacos so they had meat only, meat and cheese only, etc. My suggestion would be to do something like that with tortillas and/or taco shells, and have PB&J in reserve (or some other thing you have around all the time). You could also have a 2-4 PM party and just serve chips and salsa or nachos, plus cake.

What a cool party theme!
