Ummmm...our new menu rotation...for the family, dollar menu and Subway, canned soup...for mom, peppermint tea, ginger tea, Sonic cherry limeade and pancakes. I know what you mean, but have no helpful advice.

Sorry I can't help much, Marilyn, my first trimester I let my family eat fast food and junk food ... you have my sympathy and prayers. Once in a while I was able to whip up some healthy stuff but that really came few and far between -- and I had a teen to help out, esp. with cooking/cutting the things that offended my sensitive nose.

Ladies - I've been there. I had to relax all of my normal strongly held convictions about healthy eating and resort to survival eating. Here's what I did...

Costco convenience foods. And a lot of them. I send my husband in and tell him to buy everything boxed, bagged and individually portioned. Those cute little bags of cheese crackers, juice boxes, chocolate milk boxes, tuna and chicken salad kits, single serving size cereal box collections, meals in a bag, pizzas - absolutely everything from their convenience foods comes home to live in my freezer. It's a stretch for our food budget for a little while, but it balances out 'cause I'm not out spending anywhere else - I'm too busy holding down a couch. What I need are foods that can easily be prepared by a younger child or my very stretched-too-thin husband when he gets home. I don't eat any of them anyway. I'm too , but the family gets fed.

Smells are a HUGE issue for me...I hide in a back room while dinner is prepared and eaten and then my sweet husband, all too familiar with the routine, disinfects every surface and removes every last vestige of food particle so that I can breathe in there again. I do have my husband buy lots of lemons - for me and the garbage disposal. A quarter of a lemon with a dash of salt sprinkled on it will help ease nausea for a few short minutes, and nothing freshens the sink and disposal like a half a lemon. We keep lots in a big bowl when I'm pregnant and the sink gets wiped with a lemon and then ground in the disposal every single night. It keep the smells down for me.

It's just for a short time, Marilyn. Take any food allergies into account and then send your husband into the nearest store for every overpriced convenience food that will fit in your pantry.

I promise I'm praying for you and Colleen soooo hard with so much empathy ladies!! Hang in there!

Oh Marilyn, I am SO with you on this one! The day I read your pregnancy announcement on here I remember thinking, "Oh, good, I'll see how she manages her family/meals/homeschool and hopefully glean some wisdom." The first trimester is just so hard. We're normally healthy eaters but the past 6 weeks has been lots of pizza and Chik-Fil-A!

No help here but lots and lots of empathy!

Congratulations Martha - I missed your announcement. How exciting! Lots of prayers coming your way.

Thanks everyone for all the empathy - and Jen for the all the suggestions. I will have to make a trip to Costco (freezer gallon ziploc bag in hand - the smell in Costco makes me ) - my kids will think it is vacation and heaven combined to have those mini cereal boxes with the thousands of grams of sugar!!!!

It was Pizza Hut tonight on the menu - sigh

Marilyn, is the nausea all day? Or do you have better times? I remember when someone suggested doing some of the cooking or prep work at an earlier time of the day. Evening was always awful for me...and grocery shopping was the worst. If most of the prep work is done, maybe your daughter can pitch in to get it on the table?

I did a lot of bland, quick meals. Broiled hamburger patties, baked chicken and rice...and then dh did pick up from Tony's most of the other nights.

Oh, Marilyn, I am right there with you. I can't even think of Costco without my stomach turning. As for our menus, my family is eating cold cereal or bagels for breakfast (I always used to make a hot breakfast, so this one is hard for them) and whatever they can scrounge up for lunch. Dinner is either pizza (delivered, i can't stomach making from scratch yet), pasta, soup, or some unhealthy convenience something.

You didn't miss my announcement. We've been praying for a pregnancy for SO many years that I've been in too much shock to post anything.

I echo what everyone else is saying. You are in survivor mode.

There is always Let's Dish, I did this earlier in the fall when I was feeling really overwhelmed. I shopped out of their freezer of ready made meals. You can also try Dinner Done

Oh and your PM box is full.

I am so thankful for my easy-to-please husband, who survived on Spam, eggs, and rice for just about my whole first trimester. (It's his favorite meal, to be honest, so it wasn't really a sacrifice for him! ) I was able to handle making his rice just fine, and he was able to prepare the rest without me in the room and wash the dishes afterward without too much trouble. My kids are young enough that they were able to have the same bland meal (leftover rice, chicken, and vegetables) every day too without getting bored. And I found one "safe" meal that I liked (for me, it was pasta with diced tomatoes and olives) and made it over and over and over again for myself.

At first, I had tried to make actual meals for us all, hoping the food would seem appetizing to me by the time it reached the table. It never did. It took away a lot of the stress surrounding mealtime for me if I knew I wasn't going to have to try something new. Comfort food, right?

I am dreading the next time around when I have to figure out meals for more than just my husband and a couple of young toddlers! Praying here for you, Marilyn!

OKay--today's trick....plugged the crock pot in on the back deck...filled it with dried beans and water....left to take kids to the park and had dh add sausage and choppeds easoning while I was gone. Came home from the park and ran to bedroom while he served the kids and disposed of the paper plates outside, then lit the clean cotton candle. It worked.

However, I start taking progesterone tonight and it makes my nausea and even worse, so I think they may have to eat outside too....

Confession - my kids had chick fil a for lunch - and I tolerated one of the chicken sandwiches.

But...dh put in a lasagne from Costco in the oven for dinner - and the smell is haunting me..everywhere - too cold to open all the windows...

frozen bean burritos

and my oldest loves cooking so anything she can handle.. mac and cheese, oatmeal, bean burritos, scrambled eggs..

usually if I can get food into me than the nausea will stay at a low roar and I can manage the rest.. but I can't let myself get the least bit hungry.. hunger pangs = nausea at that stage.

Honestly, I find it best when my dh goes out of town for oh.. a month right in there.. backwards I know.. but the kids love living off fish sticks and corn dogs plus the other things they can make easily.. and I don't have to feel guilty about not feeding my dh decent meals that he likes.

Why is it I always crave the worst foods in the first trimester? I can never stand to cook either! The kids love it because I buy all the packaged stuff from the store.

Praying for the nausea to end soon, Marilyn
