I was flipping through Harry and David's catalogue today. I'd like to do a homemade version (minus the fruit) for Christmas, but I don't know the first thing about shipping homemade baked goods so that they arrive lovely and edible. Has anyone done this before and if so, can you tell me how you did it?

plan what you make so that you're picking things that ship well.. remembering they'll be changing temperature some though not "hot" but room temp and colder.. and then plan to package up each thing you make.. and then plan to package up the box containing them all.

Think of how purchased cookies are packaged depending on the type and quality of the cookie (in little paper cups each and nicely nestled into a box or in stacks that are held together) And then how you're going to need to pack the box so that heavier things don't crush lighter things.. and plan for mishaps so that liquid things are packed in a ziplock bag so if there's any leaking or breaking that everything else isn't ruined.

What about things going stale? treats in little paper cups is great for homemade candies, but will the cookies going stale if they are packaged similarly? Also, should food be shipped in some kind of "express" fashion? I'm wondering if the cost of shipping is going to outweigh any savings there is by doing this myself?

This is the reason I did not send any goodies to my dd18 in college. I do know that I have received shortbread from Grandma in the mail. She wraped it in foil and put it in tins then put in mail. It always came pretty quick and tasted oh so good even after a couple weeks in the tin. But, does this hold true for all goodies, I haven't tested. I wanted to send something to dd, but, I knew she wouldn't get the package quickly. Sent on Monday, received the following Tuesday, a long time.
