Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My mother is about to come for a 5 day visit with the children and me (dh deployed) and tonight on the phone she assured me that Jesus was coming back soon.. like now...My mother reads all kinds of protestant books ( I came into the Catholic church in 96) she is hard-core-protestant/bible only..etc...) and she says that all the signs are here. She was telling me that she actually prays for her aging parents and aging grandmother to pass from this world into Christ's arms at his second coming...so they won't suffer or be apart form each other ( her parents). All I could think of was how selfish... ( aaahhhh!!!) she is about to be in our home... and I can't stay in the room with her with 5 kids at all times...
I kind of just laughed at her comment and told her I begged to differ on this one, that people have been thinking Jesus was coming back for over a thousand years... while she agreed there, she said, yes, but now he IS coming.. How do you answer that.. I get really worked up and pray for the Holy Spirit to be with me and my words... Any suggestions..

Give her some bible quotes that state that no man knows when the day or hour will come.

Matthew 24:36-37
36"No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son,[a] but only the Father. 37As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.

Matthew 24 42-44:
42"Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. 43But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. 44So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him

Mark 13:32-33
32"No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 33Be on guard! Be alert[a]! You do not know when that time will come.

1 Thessalonians 5:1-3
1Now, brothers, about times and dates we do not need to write to you, 2for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. 3While people are saying, "Peace and safety," destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.

Thank you for finding and posting these bible passages, Theresa. Emily if you combine these with a focus on what you agree on...that we *do* need to be ready...might help increase positive communication. For example, "Mom, I agree, it is important that we need to be ready. What are you doing to be ready?...Our family is...." Also, we need to stay away from fear. Perhaps focusing on the joy that the promise of eternal life brings...

Praying all goes smoothly!

Love,

Well, I'd probably say something about how whether the end times are coming or not, we will each have our own "end of days" to face, when we will be called home and have to account to Our Lord for our actions here on earth; I would mention in the kindest possible way that none of us knows how long we are given, so we should always live each day as if it might be the only day we have, and would say cheerfully that anyone who does this need not fear either his own death or the Tribulations; either way, we're prepared.

Aside from that, I'd let her talk, and would listen, with two caveats: one, that the dc shouldn't be in the room so as not to be frightened, and two, that she won't be upset by your slightly amused indifference, which is really the only way to handle someone who is figuratively marching around your living room with a "The End Is Near!"sign. I'm not an expert in psychology by any means, but it has been my experience that people who are the most tempted--and it is a temptation--to believe the world is ending tomorrow or early next week or whatever are motivated by two things: the desire for everyone's horrified attention, and an emotional excuse to "give up" on the world or cease to engage in "worldly" activities. In all honesty I see this in people whom I know are depressed or who struggle with depression; it's sometimes much easier to believe that the world is going to Hell in a handbasket, and then focus on designing and decorating the handbasket, than to admit that one's own life is in need of some kind of major overhaul.

Hope that makes sense!

These are great ideas and help. I think my mother's biggest fear is seeing her parents separated by death and now that she is seeing her own mother suffer with Alzeithmers ( sp?) and the "suffering" it is putting her father though caring for her, she thinks t would just be better if Christ came today. And.. according to the "signs'... aka all of the Left Behind books and "christian devotionals" she reads/bible studies.. she is sure of it..... I said to her, well, don't you want to see my sister get married and get the chance to have children?? Don't you want to see Madelyn grow up?? ( my youngest) I get the feeling that her bible study and friends sit around talking about this and re confirming each other that Yep, the end is coming... Thank you for the help, if you could spare a few Hail Marys from Thursday to Tuesday, I would be most grateful for the added graces.
I love how GK Chesterton said.. when asked what he would do if he knew today was his last... "I'd plant that row of peas"

update: Mom is leaving tomorrow morning and our visit went great. I can tell that we were covered in prayer and the Holy Spirit was with us both. Mom went to Mass with us on the weekend and even watched St Francis of Assisi and the Jeweller's Shop.... I am praying she was open to any seeds that may have been planted during her visit.. and no subject of the end times came up.
