My niece is in surgery right now. Please pray for her.
Brief background. Sami started having seizures about 3 1/2 years ago, at the age of 8 1/2. She has been all over the country to many specialists, tried all kinds of med, experimental and otherwise, tried ketogenic diets, endured two separate months-long induced comas to get seizures under control, and more. Nothing has helped until a neuro team at Children's Hosptial Miami said they thought they could help her. Fast forward to today. Following is the latest update from my sil:
8:15am Samantha is off to surgery! She had a slight reaction to her IV antibiotic and began itching and turned red and swollen in the face. Benadryl and stopping the antibiotic helped. She had a nice evening with mommy last night.....movies, bath, cards, games, munchies and then bed by 11pm. She was up bright and early at 6am and ready to go. Her only question to Dr. Reghab this morning was "how many more days in the hospital after surgery"? They think Thursday, if all goes well, but that we'll need to stay in the area for awhile afterwards (don't know much about that right now). Dr. Reghab was encouraged to hear the reports from the neuro team's testing, but he'll be placing more electrodes in the interior portion of the temporal lobe during surgery. The neuro team will be in the OR and would like to monitor that part to make sure all areas of seizure activity are accounted for. Dr. Reghab is pretty confident that he can spare the communication, conprehension and memory areas of her left brain. Looks like this is the best possible scenario for her. We'll see her again in 5-6 hours. We're all very nervous today and prayed that God will grant us the strength to get through whatever lies ahead of us today. We trust that she IS in good hands, surgically and spiritually. We'll post an update later today/tonight from ICU.

UPDATE: Sami's surgery went very well. Her surgical team said all went as well as it possibly could. We are so happy and grateful for this chance for our niece and goddaughter to have a normal life. Thank you for your prayers!!

UPDATE #2: Please continue to pray for Sami. Things have gone downhill since the surgery. Some seizures were expected after surgery due to brain swelling and bleeding, but they have increased in frequency and severity and she is now seizing every 6-10 minutes. She is not responsive to seizure meds, and her parents and doctors are now making the decision to induce a coma to get the seizures under control. They need to decide whether to induce the coma where they are in Miami, or transport Sami closer to home, in Michigan. This is just devastating to everyone :( When she has been under an induced coma before, they have had her out between 1 and 2 1/2 months, with months of rehab after. I'm so sad for my sweet niece

My heart aches for this family and the trials they are having to endure. Poor Sami! So much is being asked of her, and such a toll it is taking on her little body!
