Please would you recommend a good prenatal vitamin - I had stopped all vitamins when I was being treated for allergies to several. I have been given the go ahead to get back on them - I am looking for a vitamin with minimal herbs if possible. And is there a vitamin with fish oil/omegas/dha in?

Thank you.

No help on the prenatal, sorry! I'll actually be watching this thread for info from others.

But on the omega 3s, I just take flax oil tablets for that supplementation. I've an aversion to fish, even fish oil tablets, so flax is what works for me. There probably is a prenatal that has it, but I like to dissociate my supplements from one another (easier to isolate a problem if there is one).

flax is good but doesn't have much omega 6 I think.. you might look for it combined with evening primrose oil (or maybe borage oil? not sure on that)

Also, for the amounts you probably won't find a prenatal with any significant amount. You'll want to take that seperately. If you can handle it.. the best way to go is to get a good quality oil and take it straight.. less processing and you can get enough with 1 Tbsp per 100lbs of body weight per day.. rather than the huge numbers of capsule (and they're not small). I find the easiest way is to almost pour it down my throat bypassing my tongue mostly and then chase it quickly with a acidy drink (orange juice for instance)

My preferred prenatal is NF Formulas Prenatal Forte. I feel so much better taking it than any others.

Rainbow Lights - 6 per day forumula - are well recommended as well. You can get those cheaper than the others especially by buying through http://www.vitacost.com

I tried the rainbow lights and the NF Formulas one works better for me. But I know a number of people who say the Rainbow Lights work for them the way I say the NF Formulas work for me.

I think they both have some herbs in them though.

There was another that I've been told by someone works well.. Super Mom ? I think.. but it went by another name that was sold cheaper too.. same vitamin though.

I take Super Mom vitamins, Marilyn. But, I don't think they would work for you as they have herbs included (alfalfa, barley grass, green tea)...The good news? You only have to take 2 a day!

I take, regardless of being pregnant or not as they have been recommended for anemics too, Lifetime's Professional Prenatal Vitamins. They were highly recommended in Fertility, Cycles and Nutrition by Marilyn Shannon. I have been really happy with them. You do have to do the 6 per day though.

Marilyn, I take the Nature Made Multi Prenatal Vitamin from Giant. High in Folic Acid, iron and zinc. I tried to find a link, but didn't see one.

I've taken Professional Prenatal formula in the past. I've been hunting recently for a vitamin that has safer amounts of Vitamin A. Kudos to Professional Prenatal! There are 5000 IU as fish oil, and 5,000IU as beta carotene. From what I've heard, you don't want more than 5,000 as beta carotene as this can cause problems, but a lot of otherwise quality vitamins still have way too much. From what I've read, fish oil is something you are supposed to take separately. Is anyone else besides me frustrated by the myriad of unwritten rules regarding supplements???

Shaklee Vitalizer is what I take. Love it - I believe it's kept me pretty healthy!

Hi everyone,

I bumped this thread up because I had a conversation with a friend yesterday who is newly pregnant. She told me that she had read that too much Vitamin A in pregnancy can be dangerous and cause birth defects. It seems that Vitamin A (if derived from beta carotene) is considered safe in pregnancy, but still the recommended level of even a beta carotene-derived vitamin A is half the amount found in a lot of OTC prenatal vitamins. My SuperMom vitamins had 10,000 IU of beta carotene and the recommended dose is 3-4,000....

I just wanted to mention this as I will be getting a new prescription for prenatals from my doctor that has no Vitamin A .

Also, the typical American diet supposedly contains more than enough vitamin A and most doctors agree that supplemental forms are not even necessary.

FWIW, hope this helps someone. Navigating this vitamin minefield is difficult. Here's a WebMD link that might be helpful, too. I loved my SuperMom vitamins but especially since we hope to be blessed again soon, if it is God's will, I want to be very, very cautious.

Jennifer, I have heard the same thing. The best one I could find was Professional Prenatal (see above).

Its very confusing, I agree...

That was one of the things I looked for and went with New Chapter Organics Perfect Prenatal. It only has 40% vit A (2000 IU). It is a 3-a-day dosage, so I can adjust somewhat to complement my diet.

There are so many options, and some of them have some really crazy amounts of things! I just want a supplement, not an overdose!

I don't think there is as much to worry about with Vit. A as we are led to believe. For an alternative view, check here It is crazy out there with all the different info. available, isn't it?
