Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Please would you pray - my little guy is almost 15 months old and I have to wean him - and I am dreading it. He is eating and drinking table food very well - and really nurses for comfort at nap and bed times. My other children self-weaned by 14 months. I am hoping that I can gradually do it over a month or so and that he will eventually let me just read to him and rock him to sleep without needing to nurse. I just will not be able to bear it if he screams and screams.
I would so appreciate it if you would pray for a smooth transition. Any advice would also be appreciated.

Marilyn, I am so sorry. My first 4 all kind of self weaned by 14-16 mo. I had to wean my youngest (and most enthusiastic nurser) at 15 mo. We were outside and busy alot for a few weeks. I would leave on "errands" during the times she usually wanted to nurse most. (and cry in the aisles at Kroger ).

I time weaned her too. So for a napttime nursing, I would start at 10 min per side, the next day 7 min per side, 5 min per side, etc etc. I also remember trying to stretch out the times between nursing. (stalling an extra 1/2 hour before a new nursing session, etc)

This helped me mentally (cold turkey would be so sad) and also physically, as I have mastitis numerous times with each baby. Slow and careful weaning was a must.

praying for you!!!
love,

The only one I had to wean that young, because my milk had dried up, I actually weaned to a bottle! Maybe it was the coward's way out but I hated to see her cry and it turned out to be the only way to comfort her. I would cradle her like she was nursing but offer the bottle instead.

Praying for you! You have given him a great start in life and you'll both get through this.

I am praying all will go peacefully, I certainly understand the feelings of your heart Marilyn, weaning quickly is always something you worry and stress over, so I am asking Our Lady to place her mantle over both of you during the weeks to come.

Thanks to all of you for your prayers.. I actually ended up doing this quicker as my milk supply started diminishing last week. Things are going much smoother than I anticipated - my little guy lets me hold him and rock him to sleep now without crying or wanting to nurse. We have had no cry out and I am hoping that things are going to keep going smoothly.

Please keep your prayers coming - I felt so emotional and guilty the first couple of days - but he is doing so well that I feel better.

I am remembering all of you in my daily rosary.
