We have discovered that we have a good amount of poison ivy and poison oak in our yard .
My question is, how do I get rid of the plants? I know that we can pull them, but there are SO MANY all around the fence lines and in some of the tree bases of our 5 acre property. Is there any way to get rid of them? Dh and dd, unfortunately found them 2 weeks ago and are getting over the rash now (finally!).
We are hesitant to use weed killer sprays because we get our water from the well, but we might be willing to resort to that if that's the only way to get rid of it.
Thanks!
God bless,
Christine

from what I recall (we don't have it here) as a child.. maybe weed killer but you'll probably need something particular for it.. it's very hard to kill.. pulling it out may be the best way.. DO NOT BURN IT.. the smoke can cause you to get it in your lungs.

I had heard this once before. WOW! Hard to believe, but getting poison ivy on the inside would be absolutely horrible
I may have to resort to RoundUp.
Thanks!

My mil sent us something once, but I cannot recall where it is or the mixture - but I do remember it used several things, some household items and some weedkiller. Generally weed killers by themselves are not that effective. The recipe sent included mixing some stuff - household things along with the weed killer, I just lost the clipping and have been unable to find it. Maybe someone else here knows.
It does help to spray whatever when it has been very, very dry as then the plants soak up the liquid killer quickly. Don't pull right away after you have sprayed and they die, either or they will come back. We are perpetually in poison ivy but fortunately not terribly allergic so we just leave it and do the soap and water right away after that - plus a lot of it is in woods behind us so we cannot do anything about it anyways. Our builder, though, really ended up in the hospital for weeks when one of his workers accidently burnt the stuff.

We had it really bad in the kids only play area and found that the only thing that works is pulling (best done in the winter when the sap is down) and spraying with Ortho BRUSH-B-GONE (most effective when the weather is HOT and DRY and the plants need water). There is a homeopathic that the forrest service guys take when they know that they will be exposed, especially in fire season, that you may be able to pick up at the local health food store. And washing promptly after exposure in COLD soapy water is helpful to reduce symptomes. I hope this helps.

Ahh, I guess poison ivy and oak get their bad reputations for a reason
Thanks!
