Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm struggling to find a good way to implement science. I have the Lifepacs science workbooks. They are ok...just ok. I will not use them again next year. What do you all do for science? Nature study? Etc.

This past summer i bought real science for kids(pre chemistry) and we started it but then stopped. I'm gonna try again though. I was thinking of buying Jane Claire's Nature Study unit(FIAR) and doing that.

I think that your best hope in sticking with any science program is to have a science "buddy" that you do experiments with or to do outdoor explorations with. Plan some outings around whatever area of study that you are doing this year, be it biology, or astronomy and give the kids a hunger for what they are learning. The "buddy" is the one who will help keep you on track, and you will do likewise for her.

After 11 years of homeschooling...this is the only way I have ever gotten a science program to work. The curriculum is less important than the accountability.

Good luck.

Most of our Science used to stem from nature journals - I have been really influenced by the book Wild Days.

Right now, I tend to buy "Science kits" - recently a make your own motor and a magnets one. The excitement of a new toy means that the kids will play with it and we will do Science stuff naturally.

I have also been through stages when we pegged one day a week for Science activities - using things like Experiment of the Week and Science by Email has meant that I get a weekly email prompt to get up and get the Science experiment happening.

I've just purchased Singapore science. We haven't started yet, but it looks great!

How are you finding SS? Where did you purchase it from?

What about following the nature study ideas posted at the Handbook of Nature Study blog? I really like this blog.

We are starting to block off every Wednesday- all day to devote to nature study. A nature walk, a picnic, and perhaps taking our lead from this blog, we may dive into a specific topic and use it as a springboard to work in our nature journals.

We are really nature study inspired science fans as well.

I choose one aspect of science study, sometimes two to focus on each year. I collect a variety of living books, 3 part cards (for learning vocabulary), use science kits from homeschool science and gather documentaries from the science and nature study section of Netflix for my cue.

I build focused study programs like this. Then, if we're not in nature observing, asking questions and investigating, we're at our windows watching our birds and the wildlife we work very hard to attract to our yard. I have gathered a number of treasured reference books for our nature study library which helps us identify and understand a plant/animal/phenomenon.

Me too. Very worthwhile read if you are looking to spend more time in nature observing.

And, we read a bit each day from Nature Friend Magazine which we really love! It springboards a number of rabbit trails for us here!

Erin and I have talked about science, but for any other Aussies and New Zealanders who might be interested, I got them here

For science we have been using "God's Design For Science" Series geared for 1st-8th grades. There are four different branches: Life Sciences, Earth Science, Chemistry, and Physics. Each chapter is really short and takes about 10 minutes to get through. There are questions and usually an experiment that are optional.

If you have more time, you can supplement with books from the library and other materials. The nice thing about the series is that it covers most of the science topics thoroughly in a short amount of time leaving time for adding on whatever you'd like.

I just bought R.E.A.L. Science Earth and Space. It looks good! I will try the Life Science next if this goes well. The additional reading list looks really good.

God bless,
Christine
