liked it?
The subject title I wanted to type was "Has anyone reduced the amount of clothing for their family and not liked the results?" but it was too long.
I'm wanting to get rid of lots of things, including clothes but I just want to check and see if anyone hasn't been pleased when they've done it. All I've heard is positive things but wanted to check before I fling.

Well, I dropped 25 pounds. So, I purged all the clothes that were too big.
I've gained 5 pounds back - right on my middle. Guess who now has no jeans to wear?
I have learned my lesson. Purge almost everything...

Pam--This is the first season I had to change out clothes since the purge. I have to say it was a little shocking when I went to look through what we had saved and it was all in one bin. But in that bin were a few really good things to beef up everyone's fall wardrobe. I then pulled the fall dress clothes from the storage closet and lined them up in the boys closet, the hoodies and fleece pullovers--all in the appropriate sizes. It was so simple. It took only a few minutes. Then I went through summer things and took out whatever could not transition to fall, made a giveaway bag and put the rest back into that one bin. That evening I took an index card for each child, went to his clothes basket, counted up items and listed what he needed. I popped them in my purse and have started my collecting. The point is---at first I was dismayed and thinking, "What have I done?"....but when I went all the way through the process, I remembered why I had done it. It was so much more manageable for me and easier to wrap my brain around, and it didn't require a weekend of tearing every closet and room in the house apart to go through clothing.
Here's what in the boys fall baskets:
2 pair jeans, 2 pair khakis, 2 pair shorts or athletic pants
3 short sleeved shirts, 3 long sleeved shirts, 3 button downs
2 pair pajamas, 5 each socks and underwear
Everyone has crocs, new sneakers, and church shoes.
Everyone has a hoodie and warmer fleece pullover.
Dress clothes are dark pants, button down shirt, sweater vest, long-sleeved polo, cords. These can be mixed and matched as needed.
I'll add warmer winter gear like sweaters, coats, and gloves later.

I find the same thing happens - I panic and say "Oh no, what have I done?! Where are all their clothes?" but then we *live* with it for awhile and I realize that even though it doesn't LOOK to me like it's enough, it really is! (if I keep up on the laundry - but I just treat it like the daily task it really is here, just like preparing meals.  )

So essentially it hasn't increased the washing workload, Amy (or others)?

At least here, it has lessened the workload, as my 3yo used to see a closet crammed with clothes as an invitation to try them all on every day  . I never could tell what needed to be washed and/or she would get multiple things dirty. They all seem to change less knowing they don't have a lot to spare.

A couple of years ago I had the kids clothes reduced to 4 play outfits and 2 nice outfits. It worked very well for the most part. The trouble is that you really can't get behind in laundry.
If i reduce clothes again I will keep a few backups maybe stored in a bag, labeled with names, for times when the washer breaks, power goes out, mom is sick etc. I just wouldn't keep the backups in the kids closets or you know they would pull them out. 
But it is VERY nice to have the drawers and closets so roomy and easy to use.

Not clothes but I did purge my dishes this week and, though the cabinets look immaculate, we're having a little problem with not having enough clean dishes on hand.

VERY happy with our reduced options. Just thought of buyng DS some new long sleeved tops to replace those he grew out of last year and we decided he has five tops, that is enough. It is very liberating for me.

The only bump in the road we have had with reducing the number of outfits is having access to washing machines when we travel. We don't travel much, but we did have a funeral that challenged us a bit (2 days of services plus meals in one church outfit).

Had the same problem, but I cheerfully wash plates when necessary and keep paper ones for the emergencies. Too bad you can't do the same for clothes, huh?

Just dont give away all your maternity clothes-guess who found out she was pregnant 2 weeks after she did that hmm 
I thought this would reduce my laundry but when the grandparents saw the same outfit too many times they swooped in with more clothes- then do love to shop
It has helped me realize i was saving too much -with my kids in such different seasons none of the clothes were ever the right size so i was able to clear out alot.
And it is really scary what you find in there when you do purge-really do I need the bra I wore the year before I got married? That is NEVER going to fit again
