This is not meant to open a political discussion at all. Simply asking for prayers - our family is being taunted and ridiculed by members of extended family for our pro-life and pro-family political views(which we make no secret of) - the fact that it is by people who go to Mass makes it even harder. The hardest for me is the effect on my kids - they are very gung-ho politically and pro-life - and we are shocked at the vituperative and mean spirited comments made even to them. How do I answer my 4 year old who says "Mommy how can Auntie ... say things like that when she is a Catholic?" I feel a little sick to my stomach - we have become the butt of their mean humor. Please pray that I can respond in a kind and loving way - rather than with a judgemental attitude.

I am so sorry. In my experience, children actually have the best insights into what is right and wrong - I am sorry that your children have to feel the heat of criticism at such a young age.

Thanks everyone for your prayers. I feel a bit more peaceful in the light of day. I just feel bad for my children - especially my 11 yo dd who is made fun of for being as much of a "crazy Catholic as her mom" (since when does supporting the church's position on birth control and abortion and marriage make one crazy?  )
But I guess that they are learning a very early lesson that choosing the right way is not always easy and they will get persecuted for their faith. Children are also so wise - I spoke to them this morning about not being judgemental - one of my children made the comment that, although Catholics are seen as intolerant, we see more intolerance coming from the pro- choice side.
The sad thing - I understand why my husband would not let us put up our bumper stickers or yard sign - he grew up (in a very Protestant area) where you could get a rock through your window if you had religious views that someone did not agree with - seeing the reaction of my siblings to pro-life political views, I think he may be right

Marilyn, to follow Christ's teachings is a small and narrow path.. Many will persecute you and ridicule you.. in the end, it is you who will know you followed Christ. I know that path seems so lonely... and no you are not crazy, you are asked by God to be humble while others make fun. I am sorry, but God will reward you. More people need to be strong like you. Praying for peace all around you.

Oh, Marilyn, I am praying for you. We experience exactly the same thing, particularly from members of my family (who are not Catholic and think we're insane). We'll be visiting this week, so I'll offer up our difficulties there for you.
My kids are also very gung-ho and vocal in their political and pro-life views (whereas I am a coward, hate conflict, and want to hide under a rock) and are pretty gutsy in engaging our family members in debate, or at least in defending their positions -- usually the situation is that somebody will pick a fight with them, and not vice versa, though that's been known to happen, too. At times this is all upsetting to them, though I agree with you that it does give them an opportunity to grow, and the motivation to know their stuff.
Anyway, didn't mean to go on about us -- just to say that we feel your pain and will be praying for you.

Marilyn I feel for you in all of this..praying for your whole family. It is such a polarizing election where so much is at stake, everyone no matter what side they're on feels that and so it makes for a very volatile time...may God keep you and your dear family safe from the barbs of nasty words and comments...
It is such a shame that some people are like that...I sort of think of the saying: "love the sinner, hate the sin"....well they're strong words of course,  but my point is, people need to love the person they are in opposition with and I am so sorry that you are on the tail end of all this uncharitableness, where people are not on this wavelength at all.
How to respond to these situations? (which you probably do already) I'd say, lets be united in PRAYING for God's will in these elections..they can't argue with you on that one, or if they do...they are truly in need of prayer.
