Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We've just started hs-ing this year, and we're using the Saxon Math program. I knew my kids would love the manipulatives, and I was right. However, my 2nd grader is irritated by the repetition in the scripted lessons. He really likes math and is pretty good at it, but I didn't want to miss any of the fundamentals so I went ahead and got Math 2 for him. He's been using a calendar for a couple years, so he doesn't mind it, but only if I skip the "babying him" (as he sees it) dialogue.

I'm using the "Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons" for my kindergartener, and that is firm about NOT skipping anything in the scripted lesson. So, what about math programs? I can see this coming up as a problem with the kindergarten math, as well. We would appreciate your input!

Thanks and blessings,
Sarah

Saxon scripts through level 3 are extremely repetitive. Personally, I would not worry about skipping dialect particularly when you know your child already knows the material. When I used Saxon 3, I read quickly through the script to see the point - then did my own presentation or used the script (rarely) whichever seemed most helpful to both the child and I. I also skipped a lot of the meeting book stuff. The one thing I did do was all those questions about how many days in 3 weeks stuff. My children who did that really did learn the mult. facts quite readily.

Saxon will tell you not to skip any levels or any problems. I don't know anyone who has used Saxon who actually found it a reasonable fit who did not do some skipping of things. We circled problems in pencil that we wanted the child to do - making the repetition reasonable. We also skipped books - with some children, quite a few levels. We haven't noticed any problems in doing things all kinds of ways.

Thanks, Janet! I went ahead and did skip quite a bit today, and it went more smoothly. Thanks for answering such a "newbie" questions.

Blessings,
Sarah
