I didn't realize just how good the library system was where I lived before. I assumed (*cough*) that in moving to another large city, the library system would be comparable.
What do those of you do when you need books about a subject and the library is little-to-no-help at all? agh!

Well, I used to drive an hour each way to a better library. (They allowed us to hold cards, even though we lived in a different state, because our county library was so, so small.)
I hold card privileges in 3 counties in my current state. I don't often drive to the other counties, but I do use their online databases, especially for language learning.
It's frustrating, I realize. Ask local homeschoolers what they do, because they've probably confronted the same issues.

haven't hit a hard snag yet.. but well... you buy a book or borrow a book or find info online or skip it.

I can sympathize with you, Laura. Our library is not a great one. I should probably try to get into the library system in Austin which is close by, I don't relish the travel time. So, I buy books if I absolutely want them. This really makes our budget tight though.

If you have time to plan ahead, you can get lots of books from PaperBackSwap.com - they have children's books, not just adult books.

I have city library cards for my town and the town just west of us. They both have online catalogs, so I can check for what I want before I go. If I can't find what I need there, I have a county library card, and there is a small county branch in the town just east of me. I can search the entire L.A. county library system and have a book sent to that particular branch for pickup.
I've had good luck buying used books on Amazon, as well.

Where I live, it is Henderson, which has it's own library system - but close by is the Las Vegas & Clark County systems.
I am trying to find a book by John Taylor Gatto. Nope. The entire Las Vegas System (13 branches in the Valley) has one book by him (Dumbing Us Down) the entire Henderson system has one (A different kind of teacher.)
Paperback Swap, huh? I have heard about it. So - those who have used it - you have found it good?

His Underground, history of public school book is available online to read. Here.
Don't know if that is the book you are looking for, but I hope it helps! I second, or third, the Amazon suggestions. I have been getting books there incredibly cheap.

Ask the librarian if they are part of any inter-library system. Ours just got linked back in with a statewide system, after having none for over a year, and it's GREAT. I can pretty much order a book online from any library in the state (Michigan), and it shows up at my local library in about a week. I just finished Dumbing Us Down, btw (borrowed through this system). I was disappointed - it was not really much different from A Different Kind of Teacher.

Oh-ho! So you're the one who had that out! I've been waiting on that to come back in!

Who heavily uses the inter-library loan system in Michigan!
And also the one who discovered that there is a 125 item limit per library card. Even the librarians didn't know that before I hit it!

HA! Same thing happened to me at our local little library where they regularly get flooded with my requests.
The only problem with MELcat is I can't get libraries to loan books on CD, they'll only lend cassette tapes.

Speaking of frustration, is it only me, or do you find that some librarians aren't homeschooler-friendly? So far in our "homeschooling lifetime", we've had two libraries (in several moves) where the people aren't very nice. I don't know what the deal is. We pick up our books on time, pay overdues when there's one to pay, and basically just follow the rules. We do borrow a lot. But in our area, out of 3 possible library systems there's one where some of the folks are just not very welcoming to us I can almost sense a sort of disdain when we get in line and ask for our book requests... which is why I mostly use only the two others now.

For those of you who use more than one library, how do you keep it all straight? We tried that for a little while, but it got messy very quickly. I'd love to here how you do it!

I get very frustrated by our library. Little town but there are two libraries in this county so that does help. In WY if you have a card in one town you can use it anywhere in the state. So that is nice because if I really want to I can find many books in Casper. I have to go get it myself though which is a drive for us. However, if I use the interlibrary loan it costs $3 a book. I've lived other places that don't charge for interlibrary loan and ours just went up from $2 to $3. I figure I might as well buy the book because if I get it for one child for $3 and then another child might need it later I'd spend less just buying it!

Laura, it is frustrating when the one book you really want isn't available. I see wonderful book recommendations on this board, but our system doesn't have many. I do miss how the Las Vegas system never charged a late fee for children's books and had no limit for the number of books checked out.
Probably 90% of what I checkout is from the children's section. We are charged 25cents a day here. It adds up quick when you have a minimun of 50 books. (which take a couple of libary cards here since there is a 30 book limit)
Steph, I understand that uncomfortable feeling of standing in line for the librarian to get the holds. I'm thankful that the library we use here shelves our hold books in a separate section for patrons to pick up. They get a kick out of watching me carry our load of books to the self checkout. The librarians here don't scan the books, patrons do that.

No option to go outside our county - only one library in the county. We plan ahead so I can search and have books on hand that I really need. Then when we know which time period or which area of science or whatever, besides on-line (ordering used preferably), we check out the library book sales. The library books to check out really are nothing to write home about - but the ones piled to get rid of, those are treasures.
Then you find other folks like you nearby and you share books. (I now have a library in my home and my oldest has a regular book exchange going with another homeschool friend. We don't live all that close together but belong to the same parish, so that is when they exchange books.

I took everyone's advice and just signed up for Paperback Swap...looks like fun!
I, too, make much use of our library, and inter-library system...but for what I pay in overdue fines, I could probably buy a bunch of books instead! (At least that's what my dh tells me all the time!)
