My dd 7 is suddenly obsessed with caterpillars and wants me to go outside every few minutes to look for some. So far no luck! Pardon my ignorance and lack of resources, but are they even around this time of year? In MN? I found lots of online pictures and even some cute coloring pages to go with the Very Hungry Caterpillar story but not much else to let me know if there are any to be found right now. I really love it that she is so interested but I am trying at the last minute here to get everything in place for school to start Monday and trying not to dampen her spirit!

Well, we found one of these polyphemus moths on our porch 2 weeks ago. The kids caught it in the butterfly house, and 1 1/2 days later when we went to let it go, we found it had already gone (as in "dead and gone" )-- They only live a week) and left us a bounty of eggs inside the house. A few days later we had tons of little caterpillars. Maybe you could catch a butterfly?

Well, just this week we have found several Orange Striped Oakworms, which are big caterpillars, well bigger than others we were seeing here. But, I have googled them (there is also a picture on my blog if you are interested) and it looks like they are mostly in the southeast area. I also learned that they come out only in August and September!

But, I say that to give you hope! Maybe there is a certain kind that might be in your area? Maybe you could google "fall caterpillars in MN" or something like that?!?! I don't know, I always google stuff! LOL!

Here in VA we see various caterpillars in the fall. My favorite is the Eastern Black Swallowtail which shows up on the parsley right outside our front door. We usually bring some inside and watch them grow and change. This year we are studying flying creatures, so we've skipped ahead to insects and are spending a lot of time observing the little guys.

I've been photographing and posting about "our" caterpillars on my blog. There are too many posts to link to individually, so just go to the September 2008 archives (1st post was on 9/11) or click on the "nature" label if you're interested.

BTW, my one (nit-picky, I know) gripe about The Very Hungry Caterpillar is that it spins a cocoon and becomes a beautiful butterfly. As I learned just a few years ago (isn't homeschooling wonderful?), in general, moths spin cocoons and butterflies make chrysalises!
