How often during the day do you brush your children's teeth? For the little ones, do you floss daily? Weekly? My oldest 5 are all cavity-free, never had even one. My 6th little guy has had 2 this year and I feel so guilty!
So, I am reevaluating my brushing routine and I was just curious to hear how often you all brush your little guys teeth and how often you make your older ones brush. After every meal? Only before bed?
And finally, regarding flossing, do you use the dental wands or the regular ribbon floss?
Thanks!

We all brush in the morning, after every meal, before we leave the house, and before bed.
Oh, and we use the regular ribbon floss, flavored.

Ummm, I can see why no one has posted after you, Paula.
We only brush in the morning, floss, and brush before bed.

We brush before bed and after breakfast. We floss when I remember to remind the kids, and when that (rarely) happens the kids use flossers. When I feel really bad about how long it has been since the kids last wielded a flosser, I attack them with ribbon floss. I mean, I attack the greenies (our pet name for teeth germs) with ribbon floss.
You've reminded me my kids need a good flossing.
There, now everyone else can feel free to post.

I have two toddlers (25 months and 22 months) and we brush their teeth after lunch, after dinner, and before bed (they still have a cup of milk before bed, so we do it right after that). I also floss their teeth after dinner with a flosser.

We are twice a day brushers and once a day flossers(we use the flosser's for kids)/ flouride rinsers(at bedtime).
We brush after breakfast and if we happen to forget, after lunch. Always before bed. On Sundays the kids get their one night off from flossing. I brush dd's (5 years) teeth after she does it at night. She has some cavities and we are trying not to have work done on them. I am ready to do ds's teeth as he doesn't do the best job--and it shows.

Once again, Paula, you are my idol.
I recently set up all the kids' toothbrushes in a mug in the kitchen. The flossers are in a candy dish. Toothpaste is right there too.
At breakfast, I paste all the brushes and lay them with their own flosser on the counter. I rarely help with the actual brushing and flossing, but as I clean up breakfast, I can quickly see who didn't do it and call them back. Our hope is to make evening brushing as consistent, but we're not there yet.

Okay...I'll just gross you all out.
We brush after breakfast and before bed. NEVER have they flossed...yes shame shame. However, we were all just at the dentist, me and 6 kids, ages 13-3 had no cavities and got glowing remarks. I hadn't been in over a year.
My dh on the other hand is an avid flosser. But he said he never did it as a kid, he started when he went away to college.
So...I offer no advice...just the fact that sometimes, no matter what you do or don't do, it's going to be what it's going to be. Sorry...no help!
I realize we have been blessed with good dental health even with our neglect

The kids brush morning and night...I floss the 2 year old about every other day (he puts up such a fuss that I can't face it every day). My oldest flosses every day.

OK - I guess we are gross....we brush once a day when we get up (occasionally myself or my older children brush at night if we feel like we need it). I floss with a waterpik because floss is less gentle - I use essential oils in the water. The kids never floss though I wish they would at least occasionally but I don't fret over it. I don't worry much about the kids brushing until they are, I don't know, near 3. I can hear the gasps of horror! I know some folks are all over those first baby teeth with those little scrub finger things........I just ain't like that.
In my defense, the kids have never had a cavity. Also, we don't use flouride. Only my older children have ever had any periodic use of flouride but that's all long in the past. We have a great holistic dentist now too!
Ready to think I'm more gross? I'm of the mind that people are too clean. That constant brushing, esp. with modern detergent toothpastes whihc contain sodium lauryl sulfate & artificial sweeteners...and flouride are bad for the ecology of the mouth. I think of the writings of Weston A. Price and the Swiss, I think it was, who had, um "moss" on their teeth and no cavities. Since I gave up flouride and commerical toothpaste my mouth has never felt better.
Also in my defense we have a very low sugar healthy diet which IMHO is the key to dental health.....we follow a lot of the Nourishing Traditions ideas in that regard.
If I ever meet any of you I undertand if you are wary of my breath. But I am pretty sure it is a sweet as the next gals.

Paula you are not alone!
I brush constantly. A little OCD about it actually. I even keep one in my "Poppin's bag" as Rob calls my backpack and one in the car. And one in my pencil drawer. It's a regular thing for me to be made fun of because the minute I get in the van after eating at a resturant, I'm driving with a toothbrush in my mouth.
And it doesn't appear to do me a blessed bit of good. I have horrible teeth.
The kids are told to brush after every meal and bedtime, plus floss at bedtime. It's hit and miss about how well they do it or if they follow the checklist of chores that has it on their "to do daily". We do random spot checks several times a week on their teeth.
For most part, my kids have no cavitities. The exception is my 2nd ds, who heaven help him is had nuts about teeth brushing with as little reward for it as me. We tease him that all he has to do is look at food and get a cavity.
We have an awesome dental plan, so we go in for check ups/cleaning approx every 6 - 9 months pending schedule conflicts or obvious problems needing dealt with. It's rare that any of them other than my previous mentioned 2nd born have to get a filling. I have a bad feeling my 7 yr old girl is going to follow her mother's pattern. I can see 2 cavitities that need filled and she's already chipped out 2 baby teeth.
ETA: Oh we use the floes sticks. much easier to navigate in the mouth, esp those back teeth. I keep a bag of them in my backpack and in the CD holder of the van.

we brush 2/day. my kids have rotten teeth - little pits that are prone to cavities. there are so many fillings in their mouths that i couldn't begin to count them. my oldest even had molars coming in that had cavities in the centers. our ped dentist said that flossing in young kids is really not effective - he recommended the act rinse instead. flossing is more effective in teens. as for myself, i prefer the flossing sticks.
