My oldest dd and I have a bridal shower to attend next weekend so I'm thinking of showers in general. 
When I got married, Mark's Aunt Mary gave me a Pantry Shower. She did this for all the nieces and nephews. Everyone brought bags and boxes of food. My m-i-l filled our freezer with meats. 
One of Kayleigh's friends was telling me that when her brother got married, his friends gave him a Shop Shower. He received all that *shop* stuff...tools, ice chest, etc. 
What other types of *showers* are there?

Steve and I got married on Feb 3, 96 and in December 95, we were given a Christmas ornament shower...
When we put up our first tree (and those since) we are able to recall the person who gave it to us and remember that evening...

Here's an article by Catherine Fournier called The Bride's Tree.
It tells of a tradition (not very well known) of a new wife having 12 special ornaments for her first tree. It lists them as:
Heart- love in the home
House - family shelter
Flower basket - beauty in the home
Basket of fruit - plenty
Teapot - hospitality
Bird in a nest - confidence in the shelter
Pinecone - eternity
Animal - peace with nature
Fish - Christ, as well as fertility
Rose - Virgin Mary
Church or angel - God
Saint Nicholas - giving and sharing

Bumping this up to ask for suggestions for a bridal shower we're throwing for a friend. It's a bit unusual in that they've actually been married for 15 years -- this is their Convalidation. They have 5 kids!!
Any ideas for games or other activities, etc.? We'll have a bridal shower for her, *and* a party (including hubbies and children, so it will be a big crowd) the weekend after the Convalidation.
The bride's tree looks awesome and I'll be sharing that with the other planners.
I've never helped plan a bridal shower so all of your ideas are welcome and needed, please! Thanks!

Well, traditionally bridal showers were to "shower" the couple with gifts since they were just beginning to establish a household and would need some help in starting off.
Things have changed quite a bit, and there are "themed" showers. For your couple, Stef, since they have an established household, were you thinking a theme? Something of their interest? Like a wine and cheese -- bring one to taste, and one to give to the couple, or recipe shower -- everyone bring a recipe or two (or have them give them before and present a cookbook)...those are just a few off the top of my head. Have they been practicing their faith? If they were entering the Church, how about some religious household items theme (crucifixes, holy water font, sick call crucifix, rosaries, statue or pictures)...
Those are just some ideas. Often the showers I host we'll make a group gift that everyone signs or participates.
So one was the cookbook with everyone sharing favorite family recipes (this was for a sister in law, so I compiled the family recipes, and then everyone contributed additional ones).
There are these paint-your-own-pottery places that have pens that everyone can sign a piece, and then you get it fired. First you paint it, then fired once, then the pen signatures, then fired again. For a baby shower I painted a piggy bank, painted daisies on the side and everyone signed the petals. But there are nice serving platters or other things that could have the date of their convalidation date and information, and everyone sign.
Or, present a scrapbook, with everyone contributing a page with maybe a picture, some advice, and good wishes.
Or how about a quilt, with everyone stitching or painting on a square, with the centerpiece being the "remembrance" part of the convalidation and the other squares people contribute around it.
All this takes some pre-planning and work....just brainstorming for you.
Since it's a family oriented party, the games wouldn't be the traditional "bridal shower". I can't think of any at the top of my head....

Thanks, Jenn, we did the recipe thing at the last shower and she's such a great cook already that we decided not to this time.
We didn't do a scrapbooking page but close... a frame with everyone's wishes for them along the mat; the picture is of the bride and all the shower attendees. Thanks for your suggestion!
And we did "shower" them -- with a bunch of service coupons from all of us, mostly for babysitting services and meals.... so the couple can get some time alone. And then some of us gave restaurant gift cards to match the babysitting coupons.

I attended a "Clock Shower". Not that the gifts were clocks. Every guest had been assigned an hour of the day, and the gifts were to be something that had to do with what the bride would be doing at that time. I had 5 p.m. and the gift was a cookbook, as I figured someone would be cooking dinner at 5. Opening the gifts was very entertaining, seeing what the guests thought of for each time.

Thanks for bumping this, Stef. We have our first wedding of dss' friends, this summer. Ds is going to be 22 in a couple of weeks, so I guess this is the age!
If I run across anything interesting at the shower I will be attending, I will post back on it.
