Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Someone recommended to me that I start taking cod liver oil. I've been reading the book Real Food as well, and she makes a strong case for EPA/DHA supplementation.

I'm confused about vitamins A and D, though, as I know these are not something I want to OD on.

My current multi (Optivite) has
A--12,500 IU as retinyl palmitate and 60% as beta carotene

D--100 IU as cholecalciferol.

The Cod Liver Oil I found (Nordic Naturals--I heard they were a good brand?) says it has "only natural levels of A and D". And the listing is really odd. It says:

Vitamin A 0 IU 17-39%

Vitamin D 0 IU 0-10%

How can it be zero and still be 17-39% of the daily value?

How do I do a cod liver oil supplementation without overdosing on any other vitamins?

Animal-based vitamin A is so different from Beta Carotene that I'm surprised they can be labeled the same way. It can be dangerous to overdose on the latter type of Vitamin A. I know doctors who do not recommend Optivite for this reason. In fact, I was taking it before and during my first pregnancy and we wonder if it contributed to my son's spina bifida (there is a theory that too much Vit. A can cause neural tube defects).

Animal-based vitamin a--like that found in CLO is practically impossible to overdo. There is slight concern in some quarters that you could overdo vitamin D in the summer by taking CLO but not everyone agrees about that and its no concern at all in the winter. You can read more about this at the Weston Price website.

Thank you so much for the web site. That is very helpful. I had no idea there were concerns with Optivite. I thought it was highly recommended...sigh...Sometimes I get soooooo frustrated with vitamins, never sure what is the right thing to take. What kind is the good kind of A? Is the retinyl palmitate animal based?

edited to add: I looked up the Nordic Naturals brand that was recommended on the Weston Price web site and even though it says it has D in it without A, it says this:

Vitamin A 0 IU 20-40%*

Vitamin D 0 IU 100%*

I do not understand what that is supposed to mean when the bottle says it has D in it???
