Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

in Northern Virginia.

(Hi everyone, by the way! I haven't visited much or posted in 3 whole months but I've been thinking of you! )

So, anyways, we moved in June and I am finally getting around to looking for a ped.

I hope to find one that is non-pushy! --about vaccines, about coming to all those well-babys, about anything really. I want them to be disposed to trust me as the mother to make good decisions and not act like only they know best, you know what I mean?
I hope that I could find one that is open to homeopathy or at least non-conventional medicine in SOME way, but that may be asking a bit much.

Being a Catholic is (obviously!) a plus, but my previous Catholic one was pushy on the vaccines, and I'd rather take the non-Catholic, non-pushy over the Catholic pushy one, you know?

Thanks SO much for any recommendations that you have! You can PM me if you like.

what about the pro-life lists? that's always a good place to start.. also what about looking for a DO instead of an MD? both are the same level of doc.. and both can be in specialties like pediatrician.. a DO is a bit more alternative.. for instance they do some chiropractic type of work.. you might also look for a family doctor rather than a ped..

Is there a decent health food store nearby? or a chiropractor? you might try asking in those alternative types of places for doctors that they've liked.

Thank you Jodie!

Oh, yes, and we did have a family doctor before, so that would be fine too.

I switched from a Catholic pro-life physician to a secular pediatrics (Vienna Pediatrics-) about 10 years ago and have been very happy with them. They don't push vaccines if I say that we don't want them and they've always been quick to listen to my concerns and have been great about following "mother's intuition"; which was not the case with my last pediatrician and we suffered for it.

McLean Pediatrics

McLean, VA 22101

I love their office! They even have a 24 hour phone number so you can avoid going to the ER, if possible. And Dr. Evers has a picture of himself with Pope JPII. Everytime I'm in there for a well child check, they ask first: "Do you do vaccinations?"

We used Dr. Matt Irwin in Old Town Alexandria when we lived in DC. Is that too far for you? He is an MD and also a homeopath who is very trusting of parents' decisions. He's definitely not Catholic but we loved him. He's family practice so all of us could see him and he is really fantastic about phone calls and e-mail. I actually loved him so much that I wrote a blog post about him last fall.

Dr. Matt Irwin

I can't find his phone number but he is really great at e-mail.

Unfortunately, this is the office we had issues with; Davoli was ok though; Evers was the one who continuously denied that my son had stomach/reflux issues b/c he wasn't a classic textbook case.

Thank you all! You have given me something to go on.

Kristina and RamFam, I have also talked to ppl who have had problems with McLean Pediatrics, unfortunately.

Susan, your blog post was really helpful, thank you! How is Dr. Irwin about vaccinations? I googled him and he was on a couple lists "of vaccine promoters" or something?

Dr. Irwin believes parents should make informed decisions about vaccinations and will honor whatever you decide. His "advice" on the subject extends to recommending a couple of books (both of which are in favor of limited vaccination). If you don't have a plan yourself he has his own which is slower than the officially recommended plan. My only critique of him is that his record-keeping is not that fantastic. Maybe I just wasn't assertive enough. If you have your own specific schedule to follow I would write it down for yourself and give a copy to him. He is generally in favor of well-baby exams in order to form a good relationship with the child and family but he won't care if you don't go see him regularly.

My doctor is in Annandale very close to the Beltway and 236 (Little River Turnpike). Not super convenient to you but worth a look. He is skeptical but accepting of my position on vaccines. I'm not as crazy about the other doctors at the practice (about 3 doctors and a PA total), but he is great. BTW, he is not just a board certified pediatrician but also a board certified in internal medicine so we all go to him.
