My 5 yo was burned Monday while pulling a bowl of water out of the microwave. Yes, he is a climber and was helping older brothers make homemade pretzels and fell while pulling the bowl out of the microwave (something he did before anyone realized what he was doing). Thankfully he will be fine and probably will not need any plastic surgery or anything like that so there is much for which to be thankful. However, the treatments are very painful and I see the dread building each new day. He spent today crying in pain on the floor of the therapy office (whirlpool therapy to make sure the wound does not get infected and heals properly) for about an hour after treatment. We have new medications for pain from our pediatrician and are praying that these do a better job for him. The last 2 treatments have been horrible for him. In between treatments, he seems fine unless he bumps the area or something. Yesterday he was out riding his bike much to this mamas concern about keeping the area free from dirt and sweat and...
Please say a little prayer for us tomorrow morning that the pain meds are effective. Thanks
Janet

Oh my goodness, Janet!!! I'm so sorry about this!!! We'll all be praying for him here - for an uncomplicated recovery and that you'll be able to medicate him appropriately during this painful healing time! Poor, sweet little guy - sending hugs!

Thank you all for prayers. We are still struggling. I am having trouble knowing if my frustration with some things are just the emotion of being helpless while the little guy suffers and I'm being hypercritical, but I just don't feel like we are being communicated to very well - and the therapists think ds is just doing a 5 year old panic thing or has gotten himself worked up that he has tummy upset. He did throw up once after all the pain. The last time they even told him not to say ow unless it really hurt. I know my son is hurting. I know his personality. He didn't make a peep when they tried to put in an IV at the ER (actually they wiggled around several times and then decided he didn't need it after all). Something is really hurting and I don't feel like anyone is taking his pain seriously and I understand that maybe there isn't anything anyone can do to take it away - but don't tell him he isn't feeling what he is clearly communicating.
One thing that is so confusing is that he will be miserable during treatment (understandable, since evidently there really isn't anything that will really deal with the pain of burns), then once it is over he will seem like everthing is Ok and we will be talking about the fun stuff we are going to do (ice cream, special drink, play a game of risk, whatever), then suddenly, out of the blue while he is cheerfully telling me he is going to slaughter me at risk, he will suddenly react in intense pain which lasts about 1 hour (and we cannot give him pain meds because he just had them 1 - 2 hours before - always gets pain meds 1 hour before treatment). He is grabbing whatever is there, crying, kicking his feet (you know not an angry way but trying to cope way). After about 30 minutes or more, he will weep and hold onto me, but not move or be interested in anything at all. About an hour after it starts, he is fine, plays like he doesn't even have a burn. This reaction always starts about 20 - 30 minutes after treatment - either as we are walking out of the hospital, in the car on the way home or just as we get home. It is NOT an act. I do not understand what is going on and I'm sure that all he knows is that he is in pain.
I know my emotions are raw and I'm exhausted (dh will be back in town today something I didn't want to post before).
I'm sorry I'm ranting a bit here before ds wakes up and we have to start this whole round over again. I am planning to speak to the therapists about not denying his pain (my mom is driving me there so I have a moment to speak with the staff prior to treatment and privately). Please pray that I am kind, firm and an effective advocate for my son - and that these generally caring medical professionals understand what I am saying. Also, thanks to everyone's prayers, my sis passed on the name of a plastic surgeon (Catholic and a wound specialist 45 minutes away) who made an appointment for us and is supposed to call today (yes, on a Saturday!) and may even see us today. I'm praying there is an alternative treatment for son's burns or at least some kind of explanation for how long, what to expect, etc. My dh suggested over the phone that I just refuse to take him on Sunday for whirlpool therapy, but I don't know if I can do that without some other doc behind us Or whether or not the whirlpool therapy is necessary or it would hurt him to skip one day.
Thank you all for your continued prayers. I will be praying and offering this day for the intentions here on this board, along with a few others, as we face at least one more day of therapy with no idea yet how long this will continue.
Janet

Janet, you are a great mom...you all are going through so much. I'm sorry. I'm praying for you both and hope that the time between now and your next update brings some answers and relief.

Update: Thank you all for prayers. The plastic surgeon called me at home on Saturday. I was so touched by his generosity and kindness. (It is a miracle to find a doctor willing to speak to a new patient on a day off) He gave me his cell #, asked that I have the therapists call before treatment. He knew/suspected exactly what was causing the delayed pain reaction but needed them to clean the wound of the Silvadene and tell him what it looked like before doing anything.
Good, news: Saturday was our last therapy day, it was the Silvadene that was causing the delayed pain, the wound was healed enough to use some other, easier to remove ointment and thanks to everyone's prayers and weekend shift, we got a different therapist (seems ds got the therapist that all the adults complain is too rough for all his other treatments ) and he really liked this new one who was really gentle. Also a lot of healing took place (all your prayers, I'm sure)so we didn't have to do anything but leave the dressing on for Sunday. I went to the doc this morning and he is mostly healed (well it is still red and ugly and uncomfortable to change dressing) so we are just doing over the counter ointment dressing change twice a day for a couple of weeks at home, re-checking with the doc. and he should be fine.
Thank you all for your prayers.
Janet

Oh, Janet -- I am just seeing this! I'm happy to hear that you've finally gotten someone who will listen to you, and a better therapist for your ds!! I'll keep both of you in my prayers.
