Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Can anyone recommend a good Bible commentary? I tried the 'new Jerome' but it seemed very liberal -- as if the writers didn't really believe it

I'm looking for something to give me background to the books of the Bible, relevant history, language etc. and obviously from a Catholic perspective.

Unfortunately, Elizabeth, you're going to always need to keep both eyes open reading commentaries, particularly modern ones.

I have three one-volume Commentaries on my shelves, but they are all out of print. I have the original Jerome Biblical and then A Catholic Commentary on the Bible and the New Catholic Commentary.

I found this discussion to be quite useful and Scott and Kimberly Hahn's Bibliography. I know the New Jerome Commentary is listed, but taking his class he told us to use caution with some of the interpretations.

And Jimmy Akin had a good answer.

Hope that can help some, although I know it's muddying the waters somewhat.

Well, we love and use extensively the Navarre commentaries ... we started with the NT and are now accumulating the OT ones:

Gospels and Acts
Pentateuch

They also have the individual Gospel writers
Matthew, John etc (which are the ones we have)

I've been coveting these: The Psalms and The Minor Prophets!

My high schoolers have used these as did my dh when he was teaching high school theology. He also used them when he was studying in Austria. They are very well done, we think.

The Navarre commentaries are EXCELLENT!

The Holy See has a website that links Scripture to early Church Father's writings, etc. It's a little hard to navigate, though.

I really liked This book for just the Gospel of John. He pulls from all sorts of Orhthodox sources, including the Navarre bible.
(By the way, you can get a decent deal (especially used) on Navarre Gospels + Acts if you buy them together in the hard back version...
