We haven't done a lot of travelling as a group and this is the first time we are going someplace that requires hotel rooms for all (which we have to pay for). Any suggestions from seasoned travellers about best chains? How many rooms? Least expensive would be good . We need 5 nights in the DC area. There are 5 kiddos and two grownups. PM me, pretty please if you have specific suggestions.

Kathleen,
It would help if you could tell us if you are driving, need parking, are planning to take Metro, would prefer a downtown hotel, etc.

Sorry Nancy! We're driving. We'll be spendind a couple of days in Baltimore, but we have a hotel with family for that. We want to sight see in D.C. We are driving, but we would probably take the Metro for our sightseeing. We don't need to be downtown.
Thanks for making me be clearer!
Kathleen

We have had good luck using hotwire in the DC area. There are a lot of newer nice hotels out near Dulles.

There isn't a Metro station at Dulles; closest is in Vienna and the parking garage there is jammed. You can always find parking at Greenbelt Metro but that's pretty far out, too.
Let me ask my dh. He is better at the DC hotel thing than I am.

I don't know about the cost or quality, but there are quite a few hotels near the Springfield Metro stop. We've generally used this one to travel into DC when in the area. Of course, it's been a few years since we did this. Yes, the Vienna parking garage is a nightmare! Unless you're there quite early, you won't get a spot.

We vacationed in DC area last fall and stayed in these cabins. They were flexible about maximum number in the cabins and the accomadations were clean though not fancy.

We took the Metro into the city - I can't remember which one but it was second to the last stop on the red line and had a parking garage. Took about 30 minutes to drive there from the cabins (in traffic) and there was always plenty of parking.
Hope that helps. My kids loved the train and had a wonderful time in the city.
