Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Dh has high cholesterol and high blood pressure .

I've already more or less eliminated salt (because of the BP) and we eat meat probably twice a week (because of ££). Otherwise, thankfully, we have no special dietary needs. Does anyone have any suggestions for low cholesterol recipes which are easy, cheap and tasty ?

I just took my regular recipes and made changes to them.   I use olive oil for everything even sweet breads. Switching from a higher fat dairy to a fat free dairy helped a lot and in recipes I didn't even notice. I use oat flour for nearly all baking except in yeast breads. Eating oatmeal really helps. One can only eat so many bowls of oatmeal so I make breakfast muffins with oat flour. There is a book Lower Your Cholestoral 40% in 8 Weeks. Something like that. I can look it up if your interested. Substitute a natural maragarine for butter. Earth Balance tastes pretty good. HTH, Valerie

I don't have a specfic recipe, but I make lentils and rice and sub for ground beef in enchiladas, shepherd's pie, sloppy joes, etc. You can't make meatballs with it, but I HAVE made burger patties with it! (Great Friday recipe, too! LOL).

1 lb. dried lentils, 3 c. brown rice, about 12 c. water, simmer for 45 minutes. Makes a HUGE pot enough to last all week.

Also, smart balance has a butter subsititute that contains no trans fats and it's pretty good.

I make waffles with oats - www.suegregg.com has a blender batter recipe, and I use oats and brown rice and grind them in the batter in my blender.

A good breakfast is to make oatmeal, add a cup of yogurt (whatever flavor you like), top with walnuts.    That's what I ate when I was diabetic.

Bragg's Liquid Aminos, available at health stores and online, are a great substitute for soy sauce and add lots of flavor.

HTH!
